The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
On Friday the 15th November, 10 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 were invited with their teacher Ms Wilson to present projects we have been working on during Digital Design classes this year, to other schools, Melbourne Zoo staff and the general public at the Zoos Victoria Showcase Day. When we first arrived at the zoo we had a bit of time to explore. We started at the predator section where we saw the dingos, lions, tigers, snow leopards, Tasmanian devil and a reticulated python. After this we visited the reptile house and saw lots of snakes, lizards and tortoises. But the real reason we were at the Melbourne Zoo was to take part in the showcase. We went into a large space with rows of chairs where 2 ladies dressed up as Eastern Barred Bandicoots introduced us to the event and explained that we were all invited to celebrate the work our schools had done to help fight animal extinction. The CEO of Zoos Victoria spoke as well as youth leaders from other schools. We were all given morning tea and then we walked to an undercover space near the carousel to setup our information stand. While some of us stayed to share what we have been learning at The Lakes, the others went to see what other schools were sharing. There were a lot of people! Half way through we swapped over. At our information stand we were selling items Year 6’ s had made for their Social Enterprise day, like pencil cases, books and keyrings. We raised $25 for the zoo on the day and the remaining items were given to zoo staff to keep selling. Our amazing day finished with lunch and packing up our items. It was so much fun to share what we have been learning at school and we felt really lucky to be one of only 20 schools invited to present what we had been learning!
