El proyecto propone la rehabilitación y reacondicionamiento del ex cine Alcázar, edificación del año 1937 diseñada por los arquitectos Ezequiel Fontecilla y Pedro Prado en la Zona Típica del Barrio Brasil, junto al Barrio Yungay, por medio de un Teatro de Sombras Chinescas. El jurado reconoció la originalidad del tema elegido y una arquitectura que expresa la inserción de una cultura dentro de otra cultura, un tema sociológico de interés creciente en Santiago. El análisis de uso y funcionalidad del pasado y del presente se traduce en una propuesta de reacondicionamiento del uso actual de restaurante combinándolo con el uso inicial de sala de proyecciones más un programa complementario de actividades artísticas. Se recupera la volumetría y fachada que da a la Plaza Brasil como la dominante de la composición simétrica arquitectónica, mientras que lo restante se subordina y contrasta en asimetría, en materialidad y en parte se retranquea para la exaltación de la preexistencia.
The project involves the rehabilitation and refurbishment of the former Alcázar cinema, a building designed in 1937 by architects Ezequiel Fontecilla and Pedro Prado in the heritage area of Barrio Brasil , next to Barrio Yungay , with a Chinese Shadow Theater. The jury acknowledged the novelty of the chosen topic and the architecture that expresses the insertion of a culture within a culture, a sociological topic of growing interest in Santiago. The analysis of the use and functionality of the past and present resulted in an overhaul proposal of the current restaurant use combined with the initial use of screening room plus a complementary program of artistic activities. The volume and façade on the Plaza Brazil is recovered as the dominant symmetrical element in the architectural composition, while the rest is subordinated and contrasting in its asymmetry, materiality and partial set back for the exaltation of the pre-existing building.
