FOURTH DAY Imitators of Him

FIRST DAY Rest

“For I have given you an -example, that ye should do.as I have done to you” (John 13:15). The manners and the way of living in the court of an earthly king exercise influence throughout the empire. The example it gives is imitated by all who belong to the nobility or the h i g h e r classes. But the example of the King of heaven, who came and dwelt in the flesh, that we might see how we might Fere on earth live a Godlike life, alas! with how few of His followers does it really find imitation! . . . It is the con sciousness of a personal relationship to Christ that enforces the command: Do as I have done.—Andrew Murray. FIFTH DAY A Blameless Life “Do all things without murmurings and disputings; that ye may be blame less and harmless, the sons of God, with out rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the w o r l d ” (Phil. 2:14, 15). A blameless life reveals its parentage. “Murmurings and disputings” !are un worthy among the King’s children. They identify us with a “crooked and per verse” generation from whom we should stand out in starkest contrast. To live a life that merits no “rebuke” is to keep step with our unseen but ever present Companion.—Paul Gerhardt. SIXTH DAY “In Christ” “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heaven ly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3). Paul found his power where we may find ours—in union with Christ. He was in vital and constant contact with the divine, communicative, energizing Christ. Those two words, “in Christ,” give us the clue to his life. He was chosen in Christ, redeemed in Christ, renewed in Christ, justified in Christ, sanctified in Christ, empowered in Christ. —Thomas J. Villers. SEVENTH DAY Glorying in Him "He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (1 Cor. 1:31). I advise thee not to inquire, nor dis pute of the merits of holy men, which

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; .. . and ye shall find rest” (Matt. 11:29). A yoke implies two united, serving together, walking side by side under the same load. It is Christ’s yoke we are to bear, which means that He shares it with us. His shoulder is under every load of ours. If we have a sorrow, it is His, too. In all our afflictions He is afflicted. Thus it becomes a joy to take Christ’s yoke. When He is our Master, we are free from all other masters. In' bearing His yoke, we will find rest unto our souls. Our lives under His sway will be at peace.—J. R. Miller. SECOND DAY Life’s Red Sea “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord” (Ex. 14:13). One day I came to the Red Sea, The waves and billows rolled high, My heart stood still within me, And my throat seemed parched and dry, I started in my own strength To cross that angry tide, But I had not gone an arm’s length When the waves washed me aside. I came again to the Red Sea, But this time I had a Guide; He sent the winds around me And they piled high the tide. The Saviour took me by the hand And led me through—straight through. So put your trust in the Lord’s com mand And He’ll do the same for you. —Lorraine Wolffs. THIRD DAY Divine Leading “Now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do” (Josh. 9:25). When He appoints for us trials, He also appoints for us the means of escape. The path of duty, though it may seem arduous, is ever the path of safety. We can more easily maintain ourselves in the most difficult position, God being our helper, than in apparent security, relying on our own strength. —Francis Wayland. Abraham sat moodily in his tent; God brought him forth beneath the stars. And .that is always the line of divine leading. He wishes us to exchange the tent for the sky, to live and move in great, spacious thoughts of His purposes and will.— Brethren Evangelist.
