But now?
Chapter 5:
Now the message just made her tired.
Shifting
Without replying, she deleted the text thread entirely. No response. No emotional tether. No open- ing for him to slip quietly back into her life.

That chapter was done.
Later that same day, Kat sat quietly at the small dinette table inside her trailer, cradling a mug of coffee between both hands. The place felt strangely hollow now. Earlier, the trailer had been full of movement and voices—Cam fiddling with camera settings, Ellie fussing over her like a worried aunt, Ethan lingering nearby with those steady blue eyes that somehow made her feel safer just by being there.
At least she hoped it was.
She opened her laptop and stared at the blank document waiting for her novel. The cursor blinked expectantly.
Nothing came.
Normally, she could organize thoughts with surgical precision. Courtroom arguments. Legal strategies. Contracts. Facts. But fic- tion? Fiction required surrendering to imagi- nation, and right now her imagination felt tangled up with reality in ways she no long- er trusted. With a frustrated sigh, she shoved the laptop aside and rummaged through the narrow hall closet until she found a folding white- board she’d brought from Chicago. Original- ly, she had planned to use it for plotting her thriller. Character arcs. Murder suspects. Twists. Instead, she uncapped a marker and began listing everything strange that had happened since arriving in Trailer Estates.
Now there was only silence.
The kind that pressed against her ears.
Outside, gulls cried somewhere over the bay, and a golf cart hummed faintly down the street. But inside the trailer, the stillness felt unnaturally heavy.
Her phone buzzed against the table.
Brian.
Hope you’re okay. Thinking about you.
Kat stared at the message for several long seconds. Once upon a time, words like that would have unraveled her completely. Twenty years of waiting for scraps of attention had trained her to react instantly anytime Brian reached out.
Cold water.
Whispers.
Shadow figure.
Hands around throat.
