Ethan rested his forearms on his knees, star- ing out toward the canal. “You okay?”
Kat considered lying.
Instead, she shrugged lightly. “Trying to be.”
He nodded like he understood exactly what she meant. A few more quiet minutes passed before Ethan finally glanced sideways at her.
“Want to go kayaking?”
The question surprised a small smile out of her.
“Right now?”
“Best time of day for it.”
Kat looked back toward her trailer, toward the whiteboard waiting inside. Toward the lingering fear pressing at the corners of her mind.
Then she looked at the water.
“Yeah,” she said softly. “I think I do.”
