The Spirit of Pentecost should abide in His fulness in the Church, and it is only our unbelief that limits Him and robs us of the great experience of His mighty energizing. Revival is not abnormal. In revival alone does Christianity come to its own and manifest its real nature as the life of God in the soul of man. It is the unrevived Christian who is abnormal, and revival is but the return of the soul to normal, natural, healthful Christian life. T h a t tender-hearted brotherliness, that love that forgets itself and is ever thinking and planning for another’s good, that never-failing love that believeth all things, endureth all things—that is the Spirit of Revival and should ever be with us.— R e v . J o h n Shearer. Oh for the floods on the thirsty land! Oh for a mighty revival! Cease meddling with God’s plans and will. You touch anything of His, and you mar the work. You may move the hands of a clock to suit you, but you do not change the time; so you may hurry the unfolding of God’s will, but you harm and do not help the work. You can open a rosebud, but you spoil the flower. Leave all to Him. Hands down. Thy will, not mine.— Stephen Merritt. God’s time is never wrong, Never too fast nor too slow; The planets move to its steady pace Oh for a sanctified band, Ready to hail its arrival! — o — May 30— “Thy w ill be done in earth, as it is in heaven” (Matt. 6:10). As the centuries come and go. Stars rise and set by that time, The punctual comets come back, With never a second’s variance From the round of their viewless track. Men space their years by the sun, And reckon their months by the moon, Which never arrive too late And never depart too soon. Let uS set our clocks by God’s, And order our lives by His ways, And nothing can come and nothing can go Too soon or too late in our days. -—Annie John son Flint. — o — May 31-ri?0 man o f desires” (Dan. 10:19). This was the divine character given to Daniel of old. It is translated in our ver sion, “O man greatly beloved,” but it literally means, “O man of desires.” This is a necessary element in all spiritual forces. It is one of the secr'ets of effec tual praying, “What things soever ye de sire, when ye pray, believe that ye re ceive them.” The element of strong de sire gives momentum to our purposes and prayers. Indifference is an unwholesome condition; indolence and apathy are of fensive both to God and nature. And so in our spiritual life, God often has to wake us up by the presence of trying cir cumstances, and push us into new places of trust by forces that we must subdue, or sink beneath their power. There is no factor in prayer more effectual than love.
And how does a mother comfort? Her child has been disappointed, or injured, or some treasure has been lost or broken, and the mother takes the child in her arms and presses it to her heart. It may be no word is spoken. The sorrow is too deep for words, and words, at present, too poor to soothe. And so the only thing is to draw the child as close to her as she can, and make it feel that the grief is understood and shared; and that while something the child had set its heart upon has been taken away, a mother’s love remains, which is better than all. And so with God: “As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you.” He overshadows us with His presence; He makes us lean upon His arm; He allows us to find a place upon His bosom; He hides us near His heart. Here, again, no word is spoken either by Him or us. He only makes us conscious that He is near; we are in His presence, until we realize that He “cov ers us with his feathers, and under his wings” we can trust, and that we “lodge under the shadow of the Almighty.” In the silent presence of God the heart often finds its first and deepest comfort, until at last we can exclaim, “Thou art my hiding-place, thou shalt preserve me from trouble, thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance.”— Russell Elliott. Peace, perfect peace, with sorrows surg ing round? On Jesus’ bosom nought but calm is found. — o — May 28— "Watch ye, stand fa st in the faith, quit you like men, be strong” (1 Cor. 16:13). Some people’s faith is wonderful at the commencement of their life’s journey, but as they go on and meet with many dis couragements and trials, they faint and lie down, and give up. We see two things very clearly, and indeed, three. The first is that faith is our only standing ground. When we are off this, the ground under our feet goes inch by inch. When the dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision were in the val ley, they were all lying down. There was nothing in them nor on them. It was only when the breath o f the Spirit came upon them that “they stood up, an ex ceeding great army.” Second, to stand by faith we have, to withstand —that means to say we must never loose our armor off for one moment. We have an active force of the enemy against us, and we must stand our ground, or we shall certainly be defeated. The fight may be long or short, but faith will enable us to triumph. Let us remember “there are more with us than they that are against us.” Thirdly, “God is able to make us to stand.” This is our strength and our authority, for God, and God only, can make us strong in faith, giving glory to His Name. His power alone can give and make us backbone servants and soldiers. Standing on the promises that cannot fail When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living word" of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God. — o — May 29— “P reach the w ord ; be urgent in season, out o f season” (2 Tim. 4:2, R. V .).
