In 2023, the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship selected its second fellow for the one-year training program, Eric McDonald, MD. This program, part of the Graduate School of Medicine’s Family Medicine fellowship program, is a collaboration of University Palliative Care, UT Home Care and Hospice and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. The fellowship’s mission is to foster the development of a diverse group of graduates who can succeed in any clinical, educational or academic role in Palliative Medicine. Led by Program Director, Adam J. Tyson, MD, the fellowship provides opportunities to care for patients in a variety of settings, including acute care (adult and pediatric), outpatient clinics, home-based palliative care and hospice as well as long- term care. After completing the one-year fellowship program in 2023, the inaugural fellow, Heather Reed-Day, MD, joined the University Palliative Care team. This team now consists of four physicians and 13 advanced practice providers. The palliative care program was established in 2008 and provides patient care in assessing and managing physical, psychological and spiritual suffering faced by patients with life- limiting illness and support for their families.
