I N THE Scripture chosen for this lesson some were delivered from their misery and some continued in suffering. Some were kept in wealth and others in poverty. Some were comforted; others were tormented. God in His wisdom brings about in our lives the thing which will ac complish the best results for eternity. Some heathen live in poverty while others are fabulously rich. Some are afflicted with leprosy while others have wonderful health, and unusual physical strength. We cannot say that misery always accompanies un godliness in this lifg though it does in the next. By faith some of God’s people endure sorrow, and by faith other saints live in rich luxury for the glory of God. “The -Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich.” He is more interested in making us what we should be, than He is in giving us what we would like to have. P hysical N eed D oes N ot C onstitute the C all to M issions A cts 16:9 When Paul was called to Philippi, he did not have a vision of sick, af flicted, impoverished people. He said nothing about the death of babies for lack of care or the cruel inroads of leprosy. The call came from “a man." The audience he found to consist of a group of pray ing women, none of whom were af flicted. The call to care for the sick is interesting and profitable but that does not constitute, God’s call to mis sions. If the leper does not find Je sus Christ, he will be lost even though he may be healed of his dis ease. If mothers are taught how to care for their babies but no gospel is given them, they will remain un saved, and their children will remain in heathen darkness in spite of all their motherly care. Medicine and the gospel must go hand in hand if the best and permanent results are to be obtained. P olitical C haos D oes N ot C onstitute the C all It is true that good government follows and accompanies God’s gos pel. Heathen have very little gov ernment and it is based on brute force. God has not called His ser vants to teach people who are un saved and living in sin how to gov ern themselves. Suppose they do learn the difference between autoc racy and democracy. We have left them unsaved, bound by Satan, and SEPTEMBER, 1947, to M issions M ark 16:15

with hearts untouched by the grace of God. Only the grace of God can bring about happy, peaceful relation ships between men. Lectures on cit izenship will not do it, although this is commendable and profitable. Lec tures on public justice will not do it, though this is interesting and help ful. God has not called His servants to teach ungodly heathen how to treat their wounds and how to rule their villages, but rather to win their hearts to Jesus Christ. Good govern ment naturally follows. T he N eed of E ternal L ife C onstitutes the C all to M issions G al . 1 :6 The heathen sit in darkness. They have neither God’s life nor God’s light. Both are essential for proper living and peaceful dying. God’s eternal life changes the whole atti tude of the person toward others and toward circumstances. When the . heathen receives eternal life, he puts on clothes. He confesses his evil life and forsakes it. He acts kindly to- ,ward others. He seeks the blessing of others. He desires to know how to live; how to walk, and how to talk. The gift of eternal life would trans form Stalin. It would have changed Dillinger and Capone. This life is God’s answer to all the evils of hu-i man beings and is the only answer. Nothing else will avail. Nothing else should be tried. T he H eathen ’ s N eed of C hrist C onstitutes a C all to M issions A cts 13:47 ' There is only one Person in all the universe who can transform the heathen into godly Christians and change conditions that are wicked into conditions which are delightful. Christ Jesus has in His own power and person that blessed and gra cious power which turns night into day and defeats the devil. When He rules and reigns in the heart and life, all the graces of heaven manifest themselves in that individual. Christ Jesus Himself is the perfect God-man. When He is received by any person, that one is made more or less like Christ. His ways become righteous; his relationships become enjoyable; his ministry becomes profitable. He becomes a Christian who is led by the Spirit, taught by the Word, and is filled with loving-kindness toward others. We are called to take Christ to the uttermost parts of the earth that all may know Him and be saved by Him.
