sent the Lord Jesus Christ, our Sa viour, to the earth. By Christ God made the worlds; and Christ is the Owner of all things. The Son of God willingly gave up His glory in heaven with His Father for a few years that He might bring God’s message of love and salvation to mankind. How proud God was of His only Son! Several times when the Lord Jesus was living among men, God spoke from heaven to tell the people of His love for the Sa viour. One of the times that this happened was when Jesus was being baptized. God said, “This is my be loved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” What cheer and courage these words of love from His Father must have brought to Jesus’ heart! The Saviour said that He loved His

children just as much as His Father loved Him! In all that He said and did while He was upon the earth, the Lord Jesus showed men this wonderful love of the Father. Toward the end of His earthly life, the Lord Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” The Lord Jesus did more than that; He laid down His sinless life for His enemies, as well as for His friends. He did that when He died on the cross at Calvary, and it was the greatest of all proofs of the heavenly Father’s love for all people. “God commendeth [shows] his love to ward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Have you received His love and given your all to Him? As the holiest place in the taber nacle of old could not be entered without blood, so entrance into the true tabernacle, God’s abiding place in the heavenlies, required shed blood. The blood spoke of the altar where all questions of sin were to be settled. Our High Priest passed from the altar (the cross) through the heavens and entered God's pres ence by the shedding of His own blood. Now, having once in the end of the ages . . . put away sin by the sacrifice of himself, He sits at the right hand of God where He is our victorious, all-sufficient Mediator. S ufficient with the F inal S acrifice (H eb . 10:11-14) In the old economy, the priest never completed his work; he had to stand daily offering the same sacri fice, which could never take away sin. In the new economy this man, Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, in contrast with all former priests, offered one sacrifice for sin for ever, then sat down, His work being com pleted. There remaineth no more sac rifice for sin than that which He offered, by which He passed through the heavens, and sat down in the presence of God. Points and Problems "Let us hold fast our profession” (4:14). Literally, ■ this might be ren dered, “Let us keep on holding fast our confession.” We ought to cling to it continually, never for an instant relinquishing our hold upon it. The reason is clear: our High Priest has passed through the heavens. He

OCTOBER 12, 1947 THE SUFFICIENT CHRIST H eb . 4:14-16; 7:26, 27; 9:23-26; 10:11-14

Outline and Exposition S ufficient at the T hrone of G race (H eb . 4:14-16; 7:26, 27)

Our High Priest, Jesus the Son of God, passed through the heavens into the immediate presence of God, and is now at the throne of grace. The name Jesus refers to His true, perfect, human nature, to the fact that He was real flesh and blood; the term Son of God refers to His Messianic kingship (Heb. 2; Psa. 2). Our High Priest has both sym pathy and sinlessness; He is touched deeply with the feeling of our in firmities. As Mediator at the throne of grace, He is not reconciling God to the believer in view of the latter’s guilt; nor as Advocate is He seeking to restore the believer to God in view of his failure; but He is at God’s throne as High Priest, maintaining the Christian in view of his tempta tions and trials, in which He, the Man Christ Jesus, can fully sympa thize, for He has experienced them all. It is because such a High Priest is there that Christians have bold ness in coming to the throne of grace to obtain mercy, or sympathy, in time of trials; and grace, or strength, in periods of great affliction. S ufficient in the P resence of G od (H eb . 9:23-26) Our High Priest has entered into that of which the tabernacle of the Old Testament time was a type, even heaven itself, the holiest place, the very presence of God Himself, and He is there now ministering in be half of the Christian.
