Geraldine Falls to Plainview in JSU Northeast Regional Finals Kami Sanders, Lauren

Pierce The Sports Ledger The Plainview varsity girls defense was able to hold Geraldine standout Gracey Johnson to only 21 points in the title game of the 2022 Northeast Regional Tournament, while the Lady Bears' offense connected on nine 3-point baskets en route to a 76-50 victory over the Lady Bulldogs. With the win over DeKalb County rival Geraldine, the Lady Bears earned the opportunity to compete in the 2022 Girls’ Class 3A Final Four State Tournament. Saydi Jackson paced Plainview with a double- double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. For her efforts she was named the Regional Tournament MVP.

Jimmerson, and Jocelyn Hatfield all scored 13 points each. Jimmerson and Hatfield also had three 3-pointers each and both were named to the All- tournament team. Mylie Butler scored seven points for the Lady Bears. Ali Price had six points, Cadence Liles netted four points, Sawyer Hulgan made a 3-pointer, and Kadie Brooks was 2 of 2 from the foul line for two points. Geraldine’s Johnson usually has a hot hand from three-point range, but she struggled in the championship game against Plainview, making only one of eight attempts. She was also only four of twenty from inside the three-point line.

However, Johnson was 12 of 14 from the foul line and she was named to the Class 3A All-tournament team. (Shown Above) Shelby Trester also reached double figures for Geraldine, scoring 12 points in the title game. Chloe Murdock had seven points,

Jaden Dismuke scored four points, Sara Smith added three points, Jenna Schlageter chipped in two points, and Alexis Powell contributed one point. Ohatchee’s Jorda Crook (not pictured above) also made the Class 3A Girls All-tournament team.

Despite three players reaching double figures, and a 17 point performance from Ryan Bullock (#40), the Sylvania Rams dropped the opening game of the Class 3A Boys' Regional Tournament at JSU. The Rams kept the game close in the first half and even pulled ahead early in the second half. However Sylvania could not hold on in the final quarter, falling to Childersburg 58-47. The Plainview varsity girls fell to Prattville Christian 53-36 in the 2022 AHSAA State Semifinals. The Bears fell behind 24-3 after the first quarter and were never able to recover. Ali Price led Plainview with 9 points. Kami Sanders and Lauren Jimmerson scored seven points each. Sawyer Hulgan had six points, Hannah Regula added five points, and Saydi Jackson had two points. CLASS 5A BOYS NORTHEAST REGIONAL Two Marshall County varsity boys' basketball teams competed in the 2022 Class 5A Northeast Regional tournament at JSU. The Boaz Pirates fell to Ramsey 38-69 in the opening game, while Guntersville picked up a 63-51 opening round victory over Leeds. However, Ramsey was also too much for Guntersville in the Regional Championship game, as the Wildcats fell 65-56. Ramsey advanced to the state Final Four tournament and had three players make the Class 5A All-tournament team. They include Kerrington Keil (MVP), PJ Davis, and Jalen Jones. Guntersville's Brandon Fussell, Cooper Davidson, and Tucker Leach also made the All-tournament team. All three Wildcat players scored double digits against Ramsey in the Championship game. Fussell (#14) had 22 points, Leach (#12) scored 14 points and Davidson (#10) chipped in 13 points. CLASS 5A GIRLS NORTHEAST REGIONAL The 2022 Marshall County Girls' Champions and the 2022 Etowah County Girls' Champions both earned wins in theopening roundof theClass 5AGirlsNortheast Regional Tournament at JSU. The Guntersville Lady Wildcats opened the event with a 48-46 victory over Carver-Birmingham, while the Sardis Lady Lions earned a one-point, 39-38, victory over Ramsay. With the wins, each county championship team advanced to the Regional Title game. Guntersville proved to be the better of the programs, as the Lady Wildcats picked up a 42-12 win over Sardis. With the wins Guntersville advanced to, and won, the State Tournament. Olivia Vandergriff scored 28 points against Sardis and was named the tournament's MVP. Joining her on the Class 5A girls Regional All-tournament team (shown left) were Ivey Marsh (Guntersville) and Caroline Johnson (Sardis). Others not pictured are Destinee Nelson (Carver-Birmingham), and Kei'lley Brown (Ramsay).

Geraldine's Levi Martin (#21) throws the ball during the Bulldogs recent game against DAR at Sand Mountain Park in Albertville. Geraldine fell to the Patriots 17-3. Overall, the Bulldogs are off to a 3-2 start in early March. This includes wins over Sylvania, Fyffe, and NSM.
