Auburn Comes Up Short in SEC Tournament Three players scored
transition and buried it from long range to cut the lead to five with a little over two minutes left. It was easily the loudest the pro-Auburn crowd got, making Amalie Arena feel a little like Neville Arena. Green fouled out a few moments later but finished with 15 points on 5 of 9 from deep. Auburn’s frontcourt duo of Jabari Smith and Walker Kessler continued their strong play with a combined 33 points and 18 rebounds. Smith led the Tigers with 17 points while Kessler scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half. Both pulled down nine rebounds.
Smith put Auburn on the board with a 3-pointer in the opening minute. It was the 27th straight game the freshman has knocked down at least one shot from beyond the arc. Zep Jasper and Allen Flanigan had seven and five points respectively, and both scored buckets during a 9-0 Auburn run in the second half. The Tigers shot better in the second half but still finished at a 30 percent clip (21 of 69) for the game while Texas A&M shot 44 percent (25 of 57). Auburn won the rebounding battle, 43-42, and turned 18 offensive rebounds into 13 second-chance points.
The Alabama men’s basketball team fell to Vanderbilt, 82-76, in the second round of the 2022 SEC tournament at Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL. The Crimson Tide led by as many as 15 points early in the second half but allowed the Commodores to score 54 second half points to result in the team’s third consecutive loss. Jaden Shackelford led Alabama with 21 points, making 6-of-16 shots from beyond the arc, while Jahvon Quinerly added 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Scotty Pippen Jr. connected on only 5-of-19 shots on the night but scored a game-high 26 points as a direct result of drawing 12 fouls and knocking down 15-of-21 free throws in the contest. Myles Stute added 18 points off the strength of six three-pointers. 15 or more points for Auburn on Friday, but the Tigers’ comeback bid came up short against Texas A&M as the regular season champs dropped a 67-62 decision to the Aggies in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament. Auburn didn’t go down without a fight. Trailing 56-37 midway through the second half, the Tigers outscored Texas A&M, 25-11, over the final 10 minutes. Alabama Falls To Vanderbilt In 2022 SEC Tournament
Susan Moore forced overtime in the Class 3A Girls State Championship game and pulled ahead in the extra period. However, the Bulldogs could not hold on in overtime. Susan Moore fell to Prattville Christian 72-69. Cali Smallwood tied the game at 56-all with 1:22 left in regulation, and she added a running layup just before the buzzer sounded to force overtime at 59-all. In overtime, Smallwood made a free throw to give Susan Moore a 60-59 lead with 2:45 to go. However, the Bulldogs rally stalled as Lacey Floyd, Kaitlyn Hill, Cyndal Holland and Lani Smallwood all fouled out. The fouls allowed Prattville Christian to attempt 42 free throws, including key baskets late in overtime to preserve the win. Cali Smallwood led Susan Moore (30-5) with 27 points, while Floyd added 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Marisa Bryan scored 12 points and Hill had 11 points. The Cornerstone Christian varsity boys basketball team fell to Tabernacle Christian 63-56 in the semifinal round of the 2022 ACAA Division 2A State Championship in Oxford, AL. Cornerstone defeated Tuscaloosa Christian 58-34 in the quarterfinal round to advance to the state semifinals. Tabernacle defeated Chilton in their Quarterfinal game.
