Sports Spotlight SEC VOLLEYBALL AWARDS - The Southeastern Conference has announced its 2021 volleyball postseason awards. The 2021 Player of the Year was Kentucky's Alli Stumler. Other awards include: Libero of the Year: Eleanor Beavin of Kentucky; Freshman of the Year: Emma Grome of Kentucky; Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Jillian Gillen of Arkansas; Coach of the Year: Julie Darty Dennis of Miss State. SWIMMING - The 2021 AHSAA Swimming and Diving Championships was held at the James E Martin Aquatics Center in Auburn. The Boaz boys won 2nd place in the Class 1A-5A Division and the Boaz Girls placed seventh. Guntersville's Girls also finished in the top 10, as the Wildcats placed fourth. The Guntersville Boys finished 16th overall. CHEER CHAMPIONSHIPS - The Boaz Cheerleaders recently won the program's third consecutive Class 5A Varsity State Cheerleading Crown. The win marked the 16th overall title for the Boaz Cheerleading squad. In the 5A Varsity Game Division Douglas placed fourth and Sardis placed fifth. In the 3A Varsity Division, Fyffe earned the first place title and Geraldine placed fourth. Fyffe also took second place in the Class 3AVarsity Game Day Division, while Glencoe took the fourth place spot. In the 2A Varsity Division, Sand Rock earned first place and Section took second place. Sand Rock also won first place in the Class 1A-2A Varsity Game Day Division and the Wildcats earned a 12th place finish in the Small JH Game Day Division. In the 6AVarsity Division, Scottsboro finished third and Arab earned the fourth place spot. GIRLS FLAGFOOTBALL - Hewitt-Trussville recently won the first AHSAA Girls’ Flag Football State Title. The program picked up a 14-13 victory over Smith's Station in double overtime at Protective Stadium in Birmingham on December 1, 2021.
NAGURSKI TROPHY - Alabama Linebacker Will Anderson Jr. has been named the 2021 recipient of the Nagurski Trophy. Anderson is one of the most dominant pass-rushers in Alabama program history He is the national leader in tackles for loss with 32.5 (-136 yards), a total that ranks second all-time in Crimson Tide single-season records. He Also leads the country in sacks with 15.5 (-96 yards) to rank third in program history for a single season behind only Derrick Thomas who owns the No. 1 and 2 spots. Anderson accumulated 92 total tackles, good for second on the Alabama defense, while adding a team-high nine quarterback hurries and two pass breakups BUTKUS AWARD - University of Georgia junior Nakobe Dean has become the second Bulldog to win the Butkus Award. Dean, a native of Horn Lake, MS was chosen from the other finalists consisting of Utah’s Devin Lloyd, Wisconsin’s Leo Chenal, LSU’s Damone Clark, Cincinnati’s Darrian Beavers and Wyoming’s Chad Muma. BEDNARIK & OUTLAND AWARDS - Georgia senior lineman Jordan Davis has been chosen as the 2021 winner of the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is presented annually to the top defensive player as judged by the Maxwell Football Club. Davis, a native of Charlotte, N.C., has helped Georgia (12-1, 8-0 SEC) lead the nation in scoring defense (9.5 points per game) and rank second in total defense (254.3 yards per game) and third in rushing defense (81.7 yards per game). He anchors the interior line with 28 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 2.0 sacks. Opponents have scored just 124 points on the Bulldogs. Davis also scored a rushing touchdown on Senior Day against Charleston Southern. He was also named the 2021 winner of the Outland Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding interior lineman. Davis joined Bill Stanfill (1968) as Georgia’s winners of the Outland Trophy. TROYFOOTBALLCOACH - Troy University named Jon Sumrall as the program's head football coach on December 2, 2021. Sumrall was a part of the Troy football program from 2015 to 2017. During this time he helped lead the Trojans to a pair of bowl victories, the 2017 Sun Belt Conference title, and a victory at LSU. Sumrall is a native of Huntsville, where he was a two-time all-state performer and a four-year letter winner at Grissom. SAND MOUNTAIN TOURNAMENT - The 2021 Sand Mountain Tournament will be held on December 18-23 by North Sand Mountain. Plainview earned the top seed in this year's tournament in both the varsity and junior varsity brackets. Pisgah earned the top seed in the varsity girls brackets. BRYCE YOUNG EARNS AWARDS - UA Football Quarterback Bryce Young won the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Maxwell Award at the 2021 Home Depot College Football Awards. Young joins Mac Jones (2020) to make up the Crimson Tide’s lone pair of recipients of the Davey O’Brien Award. The award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest national quarterback award. The Davey O’Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O’Brien’s enduring character, while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics. Young became the fifth Crimson Tide player to win the Maxwell Award, joining DeVonta Smith (2020), Tua Tagovailoa (2018), Derrick Henry (2015) and AJ McCarron (2013). The award is presented annually to the top player in college football. REESES SENIOR BOWL - The 2022 Reeses Senior Bowl will be held on Saturday, February 5, at 1:30 p.m. CT at the University of South Alabama, Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile.

Ider Girls Fall To New Hope Ider's MaKinley Traylor (#1) moves the ball up the court against New Hope on Nov. 19, 2021. New Hope won the game 43-35 to hand the Lady Hornets their first loss of the season. Ider was on a three game winning streak before the loss that included wins over Coosa Christian (89-11), Valley Head (89-39) and Sylvania (49-48). The Lady Hornets finished out the program's November regular schedule with a 6-2 overall record, which also included wins over Asbury (71-61), Boaz (53-40) and Cedar Bluff (90-26). Ider's only other loss in November was to Sand Rock (65-54).
1,000 Point Milestone Crossville's Kinsley Henderson hit her 1,000th career point milestone on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 against Valley Head. The Lady Lions fell to Valley Head 57-33 and the program closed out November with a 3-5 record. Crossville's three wins came against Gaylesville (54-33), Woodville (38-32) and Cedar Bluff (49-20). The Lady Lions schedule got tougher in December as Crossville moved to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in Class 5 Area 13 after losing to Fyffe (57-25) Boaz (40-24), Sardis (53-19) and Douglas (17-59). The Lady Lions have also played Asbury, but that score had not been reported at press time. Submitted Photo
