SPRAINEDANKLE? Physical Therapy Can Help With That

ankle. Beyond that, they’ll also provide treatments to improve motion, flexibility, strength, agility, and endurance. The goal is to treat the underlying problem that led to the original sprain and, therefore, reduce its chances of coming back. Treatment by a physical therapist also provides patients with the tools they need to make reinjury less likely. Unnecessary sprains can be prevented by exercises that improve balance and promote muscle strength, and a PT may also recommend warmups, specific footwear, or ankle wraps or braces. It’s not just about ending the pain faster but also staying out of pain long term. Horizon PT specializes in orthopedic physical therapy, which makes us precisely the partner you need to get back on your feet and back to your life. The next time you experience this type of “minor” injury, pay us a visit to see how we can help — and be ready to be amazed at the difference!

A lot of people think of physical therapy only as treatment for major injuries or chronic conditions, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Physical therapy can also help with minor injuries and acute pain. It’s true that many of these conditions will resolve on their own, but why suffer in the meantime? Additionally, a lot of injuries that “heal” without intervention don’t really heal properly. As a result, they’re more likely to reoccur. For example, 73% of people who have sprained their ankle once will do so again. This happens when muscle strength and balance are not fully restored after the sprain, creating a negative cycle of reinjury. Ankle sprains occur when the foot twists or turns past its normal range of movement, causing ligaments to stretch beyond their capabilities and ultimately tear. The average sprain takes between two weeks and two months to heal, but the ankle doesn’t become fully strengthened again for several months. Physical therapy can speed up this process and promote more complete healing.

A physical therapist will partner with the patient to reduce immediate symptoms like pain, swelling, or difficulty putting weight on the injured
