a chicken coop and a shop complete with a man cave. Lacey attributes her love for animals, and thus the backyard menagerie, to her aunt. “My aunt had gardens and chickens and goats, and that’s where I used to stay. My mom worked, so I went to my aunt’s after school. I was over there all the time,” Lacey said. “She did all of this stuff, and I think that’s where I got my love for all of my little animals.” In addition to the family’s love for animals, they love to entertain, especially their kids’ friends. This past fall they hosted a Halloween party, complete with karaoke and a dance-off, in the man cave. The man cave is an especially cool space where Matt can hang out with the guys and display a variety of fun stuff the couple has collected over the years. There is a genuine jukebox and slot machine and a car front end that has been converted to house speakers. These items, along with game mounts on the walls, and Matt’s beloved Bronco, make the space truly masculine. There is also a lot of Texas memorabilia since their family business, Lone Star Heating and Air, was headquartered from their home until recently. The Shirleys love to spend time together and they value the people in their life. They have created a space where their kids can run, where a business could grow and where animals roam. Lacey sums it up best. “I just get so connected, so sentimental; I think about one day that my grandkids might play outside where my kids played,” she said. “This is home, and I can’t imagine ever leaving.”
