PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Shout Out To All Our Field Crews!

126 Construction Installation Projects Completed in 2021 Amazing Work!

Tackling Irrigation in the Caribbean

Our Titan USA team headed to Barbados where we supplied and installed 90,000 sq. ft. of 60mil HDPE geomembrane liner for a farm irrigation system located at a research center owned by the Barbados Department of Agriculture. This system includes an irrigation pond that stores water from the wet season to be used during the dry season for field irrigation. Water is collected from localized rain runoff that is channeled into the pond. This is part of the government initiative for self-sufficient farming on the island. These irrigation ponds are part of critical infrastructure that provide plant sustainability to the local farmers looking to start orchards.

Rip Rap - Out! ShoreFlex® - In! This summer Titan supplied ShoreFlex®, a high-strength geogrid encapsulated in a matrix of concrete blocks, for a project in Saskatchewan. The product was used for end treatment of culverts. Normally, the finishing treatments for these culverts would be rip rap. Because of the higher expense of rip rap as well as the lower- end performance, ShoreFlex® was the superior choice for this job. It allows for vegetation and can be mowed over which is not possible with rip rap. ShoreFlex® is also held in place whereas rip rap can be removed or can shift with the passing of water. Titan was on-site to deliver the ShoreFlex® product and to inspect some of the culvert field sites. The proper site requirements for the installation of ShoreFlex® were discussed. The installation went quicker than expected, and Shoreflex® is proving to be a viable solution!

"Secondary" to None A dosing system at sewage transfer/pumping station in Los Angeles California required a small secondary containment. Titan USA supplied 30 mil XR5 a geomembrane as well as a 44" high containment system. Our team started and finished the job in one day, despite working in a limited location surrounded by a fence with only one entry point and barely a foot of space around the perimeter of the installation area.

Titan to the Rescue with Concrete Canvas®!

This spring we supplied Concrete Canvas® to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways & Infrastructure to repair two badly damaged outfalls off a bridge near Estevan, Saskatchewan. The original design was rip rap and half- cut PVC pipe, which both failed resulting in serious erosion. Concrete Canvas® was laid down longitudinal on the east and laid down transverse on the west side of the highway. Another quick solid solution for Concrete Canvas®!

Owning the Road in California Titan is proud to have completed its first Federal pavement rehabilitation project in southern California for the Department of Public Works using our high- quality Spartan Road Grid™. Spartan Road Grid™ was applied over the leveling course, followed by a 2" asphalt overlay. Even though the road had gradients along the route, Spartan Road Grid™ strongly adhered to the leveling course, and the entire installation operation proceeded successfully.

Steep Slopes? No Problem!

Titan was involved in the pre-implementation and execution stages of a steep slope application for a dam raise mine in a remote area in Northern Saskatchewan this summer. The dams needed to be protected and controlled for erosion as the lake water levels rose. Our crew collaborated with Nuna contractors to install an 80mil HDPE liner and a 12oz non-woven geotextile in a safe manner. “The Titan crew was excellent to work with, worked safely and efficiently, and completed the work well under the expected timeframe”, said Assistant Project Manager, Nuna Group of Companies. Working from a height was also an issue because our workers had to wear a safety lanyard while working on slopes. Conducting daily safety briefings (before and after work) is vital to our crew's well-being and ensuring that they get home safely to their families.

Stepping Up to the Plate During the Pandemic Our crews traveled to Inuvik, Northwest Territories, to install a liner for a new soil treatment facility. Using our expertise and experience, we stepped up to the plate to start this project during the pandemic, alleviating a major challenge for the General Contractor.

Crushing Another Landfill

This landfill in Whitby, Ontario is meant for disposing of automotive shredder residue, where old cars go to be shredded. The metal is taken out of them to be recycled, and whatever components are leftover like plastics, fibers, glass goes into this landfill. Titan supplied and installed both geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) and geomembrane liner. On top of that, two more layers of separation geotextile, our TE-8, and TE-W315 were also installed. Although the start of construction was a little bit delayed pushing it into slightly colder conditions, our small crew was able to complete the project on schedule and under budget.

Cold Weather Won't Stop Concrete Canvas®!

A drainage ditch in the County of Grande Prairie, Alberta had been problematic for a number of years. A lining solution was required Concrete Canvas® was the superior solution due to its ease and speed of installation, especially when contending with impending winter weather! We installed 500m2 of Concrete Canvas® in November with freezing temperatures, tarps were placed over the hydrated material during the day for proper curing. The installation was completed quickly and successfully.

Getting in Deep with Concrete Protective Liner

Titan completed a pipe welding project using 3mm Concrete Protective Liner. We supplied the product and used it to weld together pipe sections that are part a of sewage pumping station overflow tank. The tank is used for additional sewage storage in the event that the pumps fail. It is designed to contain sewage overflow for up to 48 hours until the tanks are repaired.

Titan is the Name, Lining Ponds is Our Game!

In the fall Titan partnered with Halfway River Group of Halfway River First Nation in Fort St. John, British Columbia, and supplied and installed a 6-layer containment water storage pond system. The existing freshwater dam needed to be converted into two produced water storage ponds. The ponds consisted of 3 layers of 60mil HDPE (1 layer of single-sided texture and 2 layers of smooth), 2 layers of Geonet, and one layer of Geocomposite making up 196,000m2 of geosynthetics installed for this project.

Snow Business The City of Fort McMurray required a snow storage pond for runoff from a new snow storage pad. There were two components to the project: the stormwater management pond was which Titan lined in 2020. This year we completed lining of the snow storage pad. The pond was 16,000m2 in size, while the pad was 41,580m2. Titan supplied and installed 1 layer of SST LLDPE 60mil and 1 layer of geocomposite in both.

Paving the Way with Spartan Road Grid™

This summer, we supplied the City of Winnipeg with 20,000m2 of Spartan Road Grid™ for the reconstruction of a concrete street, which was paved over the grid. The Spartan Road Grid™ solution will help to extend the life and performance of the road while also lowering maintenance costs.

Wrapping Up The Season, Titan Style!

Titan crews worked through the winter weather in late November to install two cells for a water storage pond for a new hog operation. Our crew installed 28,000 m2 60mil HDPE single-sided textured liner in less-than- ideal conditions, and in true Titan style still got the job done in time! Great job team!

Research & Innovation

With a strong commitment to innovation 2021 saw continued partnerships between Titan and post-secondary academia on research and product development initiatives benefiting the engineering community. The following outlines our research projects and published technical papers developed in conjunction with our partners.

Concordia University, Montreal QC (3 years NSERC Alliance Grant)

Queen’s University, Kingston, ON (Various NSERC Grant Projects)

Titan’s R&D team continued to work this year for the 3 years Alliance NSERC program for the ‘Geotextile Filtration to Improve Surface Water Quality' , with Concordia University Montreal, QC. Very encouraging results were obtained from both for Lake Caron and Lake Johanne studies. Emphasis was laid on the recycled use of custom-made geotextiles to contribute to the circular and sustainable economy.

Titan continued the novel research on Bituminous Geomembranes to investigate their physical, hydraulic, and chemical performance along with seam performance and shear behavior with Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario. Titan is also participating in the NSERC strategic research grant proposal on Geosynthetic Liners for the sustainable development of Arctic mineral resources. This research will be extremely useful for Canada’s Northern Regions in light of global warming.

McGill University, Montreal QC (3 years NSERC Alliance Grant)

University of Waterloo (NSERC Alliance (3 years)

One grant is to continue the research for improving the performance of ground-supported slabs subjected to extreme environmental conditions using Titan’s innovative high modulus rigid Fiberglass Grids. Sam Bhat, Titan’s CTO of Geosynthetics says, “I’m excited to collaborate with McGill University’s Geo- Group on this groundbreaking study, which aims to provide an alternative environmentally friendly design option by utilizing Titan’s advanced ConForce Grid™ to reduce maintenance costs and extend the service life of concrete structures exposed to harsh environmental conditions and cold climates in Canada. This method is projected to result in long- term solutions with a significant reduction in carbon emissions”. The second innovative grant is pertaining to the sustainable design of railway embankments in the Canadian cold climate. This is a new research project with McGill University studying the performance of reinforced railway tracks using Titan’s innovative geosynthetic products.

Titan’s research team has been working closely with the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology at the University of Waterloo (UW) on, ‘Evaluation of geosynthetic reinforced pavements by field and laboratory testing, integrated with thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling.' In this project, Titan’s innovative Freeze-Thaw SuperGrid™ and Spartan Road Grid™ EPM are being used in lab-scale testing and will be later used in field testing. In the Canadian context, climate factors such as temperature, frost and thaw actions, and moisture are the primary cause of pavement deterioration. Titan is optimizing products to effectively mitigate cold climate impacts in project design and applications.
