MINERAL PAINTS FOR MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES
Mineral paints are safe, healthy, and sustainable.
Mineral paints contain no plastic, in turn uses a liquid quartz binder, potassium silicate, and only natural inorganic mineral pigments. Once the water evaporates from the applied paint, there are no other volatiles to out-gas. You can paint in occupied areas and with rare specimens without concern. Keim paints are certified by the Cradle to Cradle ® Product Institute, with gold certification for material health. You can rest easy that your maintenance paints are good for people, good for the planet and equitably made.
The use of acrylic/latex paints is a common practice among gallery and museum managers and maintenance staff. These finishes can have a negative impact on the quality of your indoor air and are not eco- friendly. Zero VOC is only part of the story. Acrylic/latex paints, despite being water- based, the core ingredient is made from petroleum. The binder is thermoplastic and acrylic/latex paints can out-gas for weeks after installation.
Mineral paints also contain no added solvents, only water. Once the water has evaporated and the finish is dry, no outgassing occurs. Acrylic/latex paints can produce outgassing for days and weeks after installation and have a residual stickiness due to the presence of plasticizers in the latex paint finish. Mineral paints are 100% plastic- free.
The surface of mineral paint is comprised of millions of crystalline “pores” that allow light to radiate in every direction. When light levels are low, the painted surface looks brighter and enhances ambient lighting. The mineral matte flat finish, by diffusing light instead of bouncing it back, will never glare and compete with art or displays for attention. The surface simply put looks and feels like velvet. Mineral colors are warm and earthy, or they can be the whitest white.
Mineral paints radiate light for uncommon beauty.
