IMPROVE YOUR WORK ZONE INSTANTLY With SolarTech’s Real-Time ITS Software Designed To Improve Traffic Flow, Worker & Driver Safety

Thanks to our aging infrastructure, road work will continue to be a source of congestion, crashes and delays. To ensure the safety of both motorists and workers, proactive management of work zone operations has led to increasing use of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). SmartZone is Solar Technology’s ITS software solution that collects and analyzes real-time traffic data from sensors (radar, scanners, cameras) then executes automatic actions based on current traffic conditions. Implementing SmartZone enhances safety and optimizes traffic flow around work zones by alerting motorists of irregular road conditions, such as congestion build up from lane closures or construction vehicles entering the highway. Advising motorists of real-time traffic conditions enables them to make smarter driving decisions, such as reducing speed, changing lanes, or choosing alternative routes and therefore reducing the likelihood and severity of accidents in the work zone. Best of all, SmartZone enables users to create, monitor and manage ITS scenarios remotely without third party programming. SmartZone uses simple condition-and-response selections that allow the user to easily assign roles to sensors and equipment, define the rules that govern the scenario, and select the actions to be executed. Job site project managers can also use SmartZone to monitor real-time traffic data 24/7, review historical data records, and generate customized reports.

TRAVELER INFORMATION SYSTEMS Inform and Warn Motorists

TRAVEL TIME SYSTEMS SmartZone's Travel Time Information Systems notify motorists of expected travel times based on inputs from sensor (i.e. radar) or open source (i.e. here.com) data. The sensors are placed up- stream of a targeted area, such as a work zone or major exit. SmartZone evaluates the data and expected travel times are conveyed to motorists via PCMS, WAZE, Highway 511 and more. OVER HEIGHT DETECTION SYSTEMS SmartZone's Over Height Detection Systems use presence detectors to identify vehicles that are too tall to drive through a height restricted area. When the system identifies an over-height vehicle, SmartZone alerts the motorist by either displaying a warning on a message board or by activating flashing warning beacons. The over-height vehicle is then directed to exit prior to the height restricted work zone area. GENERAL WARNING SYSTEMS Traveler information systems can also include a wide variety of applications outside of work zone traffic management. Implementing a simple motorist warning system can facilitate traffic control for school zones, stadiums, bridge openings, or special public events.

QUEUE WARNING SYSTEMS Notify Motorists To Prepare For Traffic Congestion Ahead

REAL-TIME INFORMATION Real-time data can include average speed (one lane, multiple lanes, or a specific lane) or traffic volume. Cameras are commonly used to compliment the Queue Warning System. Cameras allows the user to verify that the Queue Warning System is functioning properly by comparing the speed data to the video feed. Your scenario-based messages warn motorists of the traffic conditions ahead and enable them to proactively adjust speed or driving lane. Queue Warning Systems make job sites safer for motorists and workers.

SAFETY FIRST Queue Warning Systems are a key factor in keeping drivers informed of heavy traffic conditions or work zones that lie ahead. These systems significantly reducing the likelihood and severity of collisions in a work zone by encouraging motorists to adjust their speeds based on the current traffic conditions. Setting up a Queue Warning System can be as easy or complex a scenario as conditions demand. Single or multiple sensors are placed upstream from a congested area or construction zone. Real-time data is sent via private network to servers, and analyzed by SmartZone software. As traffic conditions change, messages on message boards are updated to inform travelers of potential delays or incidents ahead. SmartZone offers remote monitoring and message updating, automatic user-notification via text mes- sage or email, and is designed to work with any traffic management system.

uu MESSAGING USED INCLUDES: l Traffic congestion alert l Lane closures l Alternate routes or estimated time delays

VARIABLE SPEED LIMIT SYSTEMS Provide Motorists With Speed Limit Guidance

CONDITIONS AND SPEED There are many factors that could influence safe driving speed including road work, traffic volume (i.e. rush hour), pedestrian traffic (i.e. school zone), weather conditions (i.e. fog, ice), and roadway surface conditions. Sensors gather the specified data to be analyzed by SmartZone software, and based on the outcome, a safe traveling speed is determined and displayed on speed limit signs upstream. As traffic (or environ- mental) conditions vary, speed limit signs can be programmed to change either automatically or manually. Cameras are often used to compliment the Variable Speed Limit System. Cameras allows the user to remotely confirm or deny the existence of an adverse road condition and update the system response accordingly. MAINTAINING A SAFE SPEED Variable Speed Limit System enables motorists to maintain a safe speed, while maintaining traffic moving safely and efficiently. Studies show that reducing the speed limit in unfavorable or adverse conditions reduces the probability of accidents, helps manage traffic flow, and increases safety.

DYNAMIC LANE MERGE SYSTEMS Provide A Flexible Approach To Work Zone Lane Closure

SAFETY FIRST Smart Zone’s Dynamic Merge System provides a flexible approach to work zone lane closures by implementing a late or early merge option based on current traffic conditions. Utilizing traffic density and/or speed sensors, Smart- Zone monitors real-time changes in traffic flow prior to the lane closure. SmartZone software uses logic to determine the best merge strategy for the current traffic condition and automatically communicates the preferred merge strategy to motorists via portable changeable message signs. SmartZone supports remote monitoring and mes- sage updating, automatic user-notification via text message or email, and is designed to work with any NTCIP traffic management system.

LATE OR EARLY MERGE To optimize traffic flow in work zones with lane closures, the vehicle merge strategy is primarily dependent on current traffic volume and available road space. In a high traffic density scenario, implementing a late merge strategy maximizes the use of the available travel lanes and encourages ‘zipper merging’ which eases traffic flow in slow or high congestion traffic conditions. Alternatively, in a low traffic density scenario, imple- menting an early merge strategy encourages motor- ists to merge at a greater distance prior to the lane closure. This method allows the traffic to efficiently flow through the work zone safely at normal average speeds and avoid build up of traffic congestion.

TRUCKS ENTERING HIGHWAY SYSTEMS Improve Traffic Flow, Improve Worker Safety & Improve Driver Safety

WORK ZONE SAFETY SmartZone’s Vehicle Ingress Notification System (Vehicle Entering Highway System) informs motorists of construction vehicles merging into traffic within the work zone. Providing this real-time information allows the traveling public to adjust vehicle speed and safely travel through the work zone.

KEEPING TRAFFIC FLOWING Sensors placed in a work zone detect construction vehicles exiting the zone and attempting to merge into traffic. SmartZone software analyzes the sensor data, and instantly changes a message board display or activates flashing warning beacons located up- stream which advise motorists of the impending merge. Motorists reduce speed or change lanes to allow the construction vehicle access to the travel lane with minimal effect on overall traffic flow.

INCIDENT DETECTION SYSTEMS Faster Response to Accidents in a Work Zone

REAL-TIME NOTIFICATIONS An Incident Detection System provides real-time notifications to traffic managers when traffic volume in a work zone unexpectedly slows or stops. SmartZone evaluates traffic data from sensors (side- fire radar, doppler radar etc.) placed prior to or in a work zone and determines if an abnormal traffic condition exists. If traffic speed drops below a user-defined threshold, SmartZone sends an alert notification via email or SMS (text) to designated personnel. With the aid of cameras installed in and around the work zone, the incident location is identified, and the proper response (emergency responders, DOT maintenance crew, tow vehicle, etc.) can be dispatched. Motorists can be informed of incidents and delays via navigation apps, 511 Travel Information Systems, and/or changeable message signs around the work zone.

SAFE TRAVELS Deployment of an Incident Detection System (IDS) facilitates quick and effective response to traffic inci- dents, improves work zone safety, and reduces the likelihood of secondary accidents. Providing traffic managers with real-time information allows for swift incident verification and correct dispatch of response vehicles. This is not only a cost and time savings for responders and motorists, but for DOT's as well. SmartZone can be integrated into existing ITS configurations, can use data from third-party navigation platforms (Waze, INRIX, Google Maps, etc.), and is designed to work with any NTICP compatible traffic management system. The software offers the ability to monitor remotely, update messages, and send notifications via email and text.

uu MESSAGING USED INCLUDES: l Accident or congestion alerts l Lane closures l Alternate routes options
