DYNAMIC LANE MERGE SYSTEMS Provide A Flexible Approach To Work Zone Lane Closure
SAFETY FIRST Smart Zone’s Dynamic Merge System provides a flexible approach to work zone lane closures by implementing a late or early merge option based on current traffic conditions. Utilizing traffic density and/or speed sensors, Smart- Zone monitors real-time changes in traffic flow prior to the lane closure. SmartZone software uses logic to determine the best merge strategy for the current traffic condition and automatically communicates the preferred merge strategy to motorists via portable changeable message signs. SmartZone supports remote monitoring and mes- sage updating, automatic user-notification via text message or email, and is designed to work with any NTCIP traffic management system.
LATE OR EARLY MERGE To optimize traffic flow in work zones with lane closures, the vehicle merge strategy is primarily dependent on current traffic volume and available road space. In a high traffic density scenario, implementing a late merge strategy maximizes the use of the available travel lanes and encourages ‘zipper merging’ which eases traffic flow in slow or high congestion traffic conditions. Alternatively, in a low traffic density scenario, imple- menting an early merge strategy encourages motor- ists to merge at a greater distance prior to the lane closure. This method allows the traffic to efficiently flow through the work zone safely at normal average speeds and avoid build up of traffic congestion.
