Inspired by the work of Andy Warhol, contemporary artist Pakpoom Silaphan fuses Western logos and cultural icons such as Elvis and Marilyn Monroe with themes from his rural Thai upbringing. His clash of East and West explores mass consumerism and has been acclaimed as ‘intriguing’ and ‘iconic’.
Brought up in a rural Thai community, Pakpoom’s early access to the Western world came from the advertising of mega brands and commercial logos. His early talent in art led him to pursue this academically, resulting in a Bachelor of Fine Art from Silapakorn University and Bangkok. His interest in the West later spurred him to move to the UK, achieving a post-graduate diploma in printmaking at the Camberwell College of Art and a MA in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art and Design. Described as the ‘pop artist of these times’, Pakpoom examines notions of globalisation and mass consumerism through mixed media and collage pieces. Using his favoured artistic icons, such as Andy Warhol, David Bowie and Frida Khalo, he collages and paints over branded advertising signs and crates from brands such as Pepsi and Coca Cola. Pakpoom says of his work “The influence of living in a different culture inspires much of my work. I think multicultural societies are as complex as an unfit jigsaw, but offer many opportunities creatively. I like to work with themes from everyday life and popular culture, both for my subject matter and my media as well.” This collection establishes how every country can be connected through inherently Eastern objects reworked into Westernised statements of consumption, advertising and iconography. Pakpoom has, without doubt, used the universal language of signs and symbols to create an eye-catching display of works.
