A FAMILY HOBBY THAT'S TAKING FLIGHT! Our Butterfly Garden

We’ve been busy! We have a special family hobby to share: our butterfly garden!

Our entire family takes part in growing plants that attract monarch butterflies, catching the caterpillars, and releasing them in our yard! I've noticed that the butterflies stay around our butterfly garden for the rest of their life cycle. The females lay their eggs on our butterfly plants and return regularly. They may wander off, but they always come back, making our yard and garden beautiful with their constant presence.

We have five butterfly garden tips to share!

• Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on two different types of plants: the crown flower — also known as Pua kalaunu in Hawaiian — and milkweed. The crown flower is popular as people make leis out of it, and was also the Queen’s favorite flower. Even though they only lay their eggs on the crown flower and milkweed, I do have other butterfly plants and flowers to attract them. • When I see a caterpillar on either crown flower or milkweed leaves, I bring each one inside and place them in a butterfly cage. In the wild, there’s about a 10% rate of survival. But when I place them in the butterfly cage, they have about a 95% chance of making it. • When the caterpillars are in the cage, I make sure to clean out any debris daily and provide fresh crown flowers and milkweed for them to feed on. Growing caterpillars have quite the appetite! • The monarch caterpillars eventually become chrysalis for about 8-15 days until they emerge as butterflies! They hang upside down to dry for a while, and then we release them in our yard!

• On the mainland, monarchs migrate, but here in Hawaii, they don’t — they are present year-round, and we really enjoy them!

If you feel inspired and start a butterfly garden of your own, or if you already have one, please share your photos and tips! I’m always thrilled to meet another butterfly enthusiast!

Fans of deathbed dramas can hardly ask for a more harrowing tale than the story of an overconfident doctor who tried to resurrect George Washington. As the former president lay dying in December of 1799, Dr. William Thornton raced to Washington’s Mount Vernon home in hopes of reaching him before he passed away, according to “Washington’s End,” a 2020 book by historian and White House speechwriter Jonathan Horn. Washington had been both a friend and benefactor to Thornton. A classic product of the Enlightenment, Thornton was a brilliant polymath considered a genius in his time. He was born in the British West Indies and attended medical school in Scotland before gaining American citizenship. Washington selected Thornton’s design for the U.S. Capitol. Upon arriving at Mount Vernon, Thornton was shocked to see the president’s corpse, frozen solid from the frigid winter temperatures and surrounded by grieving family and friends. The situation did not stop the doctor from hatching a bold plan to revive him. Thornton had studied numerous cases of people who were revived after appearing to be dead. He was an early advocate of the medical technique of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to revive victims of near-drownings. Before Washington died, he had suffered a series of tortuous medical treatments for a bad throat infection, including numerous bloodlettings, throat poultices, enemas, and purgatives. Thornton recalled cases he had read about fish being revived after freezing and proposed to thaw Washington’s corpse in cold water, restore air to his body by performing a tracheotomy, and replace the blood drained by the doctors with lamb’s blood. If a lack of air and loss of blood had killed the president, then restoring them and warming the body should revive him, Thornton reasoned.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning Hacks You Need to Try

SAY GOODBYE TO GRIME We’ve all been there before, scrubbing away at the bathroom and kitchen to no avail! It’s time to say goodbye to grime and hello to shine because the ultimate cleaning superstar is probably already sitting in your cabinet. Baking soda has the ideal texture and chemical properties for many household cleaning tasks. This inexpensive product is an environmentally friendly and effective alternative to traditional cleaning methods, from deodorizing smells Deodorize stinky trash cans. Baking soda can absorb foul odors thanks to a chemical reaction that changes the pH of a smelly compound, eliminating the smell. So, if your trash can needs a refresher, just sprinkle a little baking soda inside it. Alternatively, you can mix baking soda and water into a spray bottle to deodorize the outside of your garbage can or other items like coolers. UNLEASH THE POWER OF BAKING SODA

to removing tricky stain agents. Get ready to shine with these surprising baking soda cleaning hacks! Unclog stubborn sink drains. When your sink gets clogged, don’t reach for the Drano. Instead, sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and cover the drain. Let this mixture sit for 30 minutes, and the two products will mix and create bubbles. Those bubbles can help break down mineral deposits and gunk to reduce blockages. Finish by running hot water down the drain to flush out debris.

Clean build-up on shower doors. Shower doors are prone to limescale and mineral deposit buildup, which can be challenging to clean. Once again, the powerful combination of baking soda and vinegar is here to save the day. Start by dipping paper towels in hot white vinegar and attaching them to the shower door and track. Let the vinegar sit for 30–60 minutes, allowing the acid to loosen mineral deposits. Next, sprinkle baking soda on a damp rag, gently wipe down the doors, and rinse. Next time you’re wrestling with household messes, remember the solution is simpler than you think. With baking soda in your washing arsenal, you can easily tackle the toughest grime.
