Vine Birth-Pangs of the World’s Best Age

“Religious, civilized, educated, m oral and accepting Me as a teacher w ith divine credentials, Nicodemus, you m ust be bo rn ag ain !” The new b irth is Not Even Accepting Christ W ith H is M iracle W orking Power. Nicodemus said, “No man can do these m iracles th a t Thou doest except God be w ith him .” He is w illing to class Christ w ith E lijah and o th er Old Testam ent prophets who w rought m iracles. Provided Christ will adm it th a t He is only a man perform ing m iracles as o ther men have done in th e power of God, th e Sanhedrin will he glad to accept Him as a teacher w ith divine credentials attested by m ir acle-working power. B u t even th is is no t sufficient to pro duce th e new birth. “Religious, civilized, educated, moral and accepting Me as a teach'er w ith divine credentials attested by m iracle- working power, Nicodemus, you m u st be born ag ain !” Then, what is th e new b irth , if it is neith er religion, civilization, education, m orality nor accepting Christ as teacher w ith divine credentials attested by m iracle-working power? Our second text answers th is im po rtan t question: “As Moses lifted up th e serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, th a t whosoever believeth may in Him have everlasting life.” “Nicodemus, you remember th a t scene in th e w ilderness, when th e Israelites, b itten by fiery serpents, were dying by hundreds and God'told Moses to make a piece of brass into th e shape of a serpent, place it on a pole in th e m idst of the camp and proclaim to the people th a t all who looked a t the serpent of brass would be healed. So I am to be lifted up on th e cross and whosoever looks unto Me by faith shall be healed of th e bite of th e fiery serpen t of sin. That, Nicodemus, is th e new birth. It is brought about by a vision of God in Christ as ‘The Lamb of God th a t takes away th e sin of th e w orlds ” E tern al life is not everlasting continuity of existence. Dead things exist. I can imagine a piece .of cold steel ex isting a m illion years, ju st as dead then as now. Every man is immortal, bu t imm ortality is not eternal life. He may exist and be dead on th e o th er side of th e grave, as well as on th is side. W hat, Then, Is E te rn a l Life The Lord of life defines it in John 17:3-16. “This is life eternal th a t they should know Thee, th e only tru e God and Him whom Thou didst send, even Jesus Christ.” Knowing God in Christ is etern al life. To know God is to live. To be igno ran t of God is to be dead. We may know about God by looking a t th e stars, for th e heavens declare His glory. We may know something of H is wisdom and power by a study of natu re. But if we would know God, we must go to Calvary and look into th e face of Him who hangs on the m iddle cross. God h as glory, wisdom and power; but God is Love. And here we see w hat God is. Beholding “th e Lamb of God th a t ta k eth away th e sin of th e w orld,” is a vision of God himself, or Love dying for a lost world, and th a t vision gives the new birth. No wonder, therefore, P aul w rote “ God forbid th a t I should glory save in th e cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,” for th is cross of Christ is the fullest revelation of God th is world has ever seen. It is the only vision th a t gives etern al knowledge of God. Once we know God in Christ, we know Him forever. Nothing in time or etern ity can ever efface th a t knowledge. (Continued on next page)
