Elevate Your Quantitative Skills EQUATES (Everything Quantitative for Teachers and Students) is a new developing initiative in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology that will help both faculty and students through its four quadrants: I.) videos to support teaching and learning, II.) a virtual peer tutoring center, III.) professional development workshops for sharing best practices for using calculators, equation editors and other computer software and IV.) research support. Starting activities include the creation of a searchable video repository, with unique videos created by Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology faculty, to be used by faculty and students in all College of Arts & Sciences departments and other colleges as well. Students and faculty can search for any videos that may aid with a topic that is causing struggle. As soon as the video repository is set up, peer tutoring capabilities will be added in the next implementation step for the initiative.

The unique approach, called Humanistic STEM, or H-STEM, uses a blended curriculum to produce a more well-rounded — and marketable — graduate. The H-STEM method, developed by Dr. Debra Bourdeau, Associate Dean of Academics and Student Success, and Dr. Beverly Wood, interim department chair of Mathematics, Science and Technology chair of the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology, has proven so successful that the program earned a three-year, $291,000 NSF grant to adapt the model for other institutions. The H-STEM initiative is another example of how the College of Arts & Sciences is working to help students secure high-paying jobs by ensuring they have problem-solving skills that go beyond the STEM arena.
