A Blend for the Future A National Science Foundation grant is helping an associate professor from the College of Arts & Sciences expand the definition of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education by incorporating humanities lessons that focus on communication, reasoning and creativity. The unique approach, called Humanistic STEM, or H-STEM, uses a blended curriculum to produce a more well-rounded — and marketable — graduate. The H-STEM method, developed by Dr. Debra Bourdeau, Associate Dean of Academics and Student Success, and Dr. Beverly Wood, interim department chair of Mathematics, Science and Technology chair of the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology, has proven so successful that the program earned a three-year, $291,000 NSF grant to adapt the model for other institutions. The H-STEM initiative is another example of how the College of Arts & Sciences is working to help students secure high-paying jobs by ensuring they have problem-solving skills that go beyond the STEM arena.

Helping Students Find Direction The College of Arts & Sciences is home to the unique Center for Mentorship Programs and Success (COMPASS) to help guide you through the Worldwide educational journey and beyond. We offer four COMPASS headings to help you “Navigate Forward” to complete your degree and reach your personal and professional goals and the opportunity to build lifelong connections with faculty members and fellow students. s Cohort Mentorship s Peer Mentorship

s Research Mentorship s Individual Mentorship

In the past several years, COMPASS has helped students navigate personal, professional and academic journeys through mentorship and guidance. Student Marily Aguilar-Hernandez said about the skills she learned through COMPASS: They have “helped me so much that I am using them now in my everyday life.”
