Chronicles of an adventure around the world Editor’s note: Last summer, we published an article on the Ménard-Donovan family, a few days before they left for a year-long tour around the world. Here is the first of several accounts of their trip that will be pub- lished over the next fewmonths.

Life in Iceland became a bit more idyllic after a good night’s rest and we quite en- joyed the nature trails leading to the city’s downtown core as well as the healthy ocean air. Bathing in the silica waters of the Blue Lagoon surrounded by lava fields was also quite picturesque and it is a site not to be missed for those who decide to make a stop in Iceland - maybe on their way to an- other destination? I say this in a most gentle way, having enjoyed my short stay and see- ing the natural beauty this country has to offer but the tourist industry is young and this can be felt all around. And then we travelled to London, the his- torically wonderful London. We fell in love with the city the moment we stepped out of the Underground at Oxford Circus. Our hostel provided us with a family room com- prised of a full bathroom. Tiny as a regular European apartment, it still provided us with added luxury we quite enjoyed. Every day, we would wake up early to allow for an hour or two of French and history les-

By Anne Donovan For our family of four, the time was right to take a sabbatical leave and travel around the world. We wanted to invest in learning first-hand how others in the world live, as well as discover the treasures that the coun- tries we will visit have to offer. The first stop on our own race around the world was Reykjavik, Iceland. We arrived at the Keflavik international airport on a cold and rainy September day. The difference in temperature from the + 25 degree Celsius in Ottawa was striking. This, our lack of sleep and the hoops we had to jump through at the airport made the hour shuttle bus ride more daunting than necessary. We were nauseated by the curvy roads and felt lost in the desolate landscape.

sons. Schooling over, we would head to a different part of the city to visit as many at- tractions as our little feet (and our London passes) could afford us. The history and anecdotes of guides and city employees were priceless. From guided walks to Beefeater tours at the Tower of London to Shakespeare Globe’s backstage experience, we have had the privilege of taking it all in and learning some fascinating history lessons in passing. We have walked across historical bridges, climbed the 528 steps to the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral, stood on the Prime Meridian in Greenwich, saw timeless art pieces and took time to re- flect upon our journey at Westminster Ab- bey. This wonderful city is a must see and if Londoners seem cold and unhelpful, the moment you ask for help, they will bend over backwards for you. Our travels took us next to the Celts and their wonderful island of Ireland. Our first stop was Dublin, the capital of the Republic. T erminex is a local business in pest management and humanitarian treatment of animals established 3 years ago. The success of my business and its growth is due to the support that I received from La Cité collégiale and the OSEB program, since the facilitators and coordinators are the ones who helped me start my business, in reality start my dream. They taught me a lot, among other things, the basics of accounting, marketing, management and administration. Due to the facilitators’ thorough knowledge of the subject matter, I was able to easily absorb the information taught. The OSEB team has always ensured the growth of my business with follow- up phone calls or E-mails asking if everything was going well. Briefly, I would like to thank all members of the OSEB team for sharing their knowledge and helping me become self-employed. Very rapidly you learn that the Irish people love to talk and have fun. I think the next saying sums up well their personality: Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story. After Dublin, we made our way to Belfast and immediately felt the disconnect be- tween the Republic and Northern Ireland, UK. The unionist town of Belfast was mostly deserted and although the Irish twang still existed, the good humour seemed a bit lost in the vastness of the town. Back in the Republic, we visited the west coast with its limestone plateau, Cliffs of Moher andmany medieval castles, or what is left of them. There are still a few Irish cities on our itin- erary, but I think we are ready to cross the ocean to France and settle in Paris for a few weeks. I hear the petit pain au chocolat call- ing to us.
