L ife is a painting, and you are the artist,” says motivational speaker Paul J. Meyer. “You have on your palette all the colors in the spectrum—the same ones available to Michelangelo and DaVinci.” And when it comes to home design, it’s true: you can have the same vibrant yellows as Van Gogh or moody blues of Picasso. Of course, the great masters knew that color use need not be highlighter yellow or acid green to be impactful; a shade as soft as a whisper can pop against a neutral back- ground. Some spaces call to be woken up with contrast; others seem to need soft, complementary hues. And the right choice will largely be a matter of personal taste. So we are welcoming spring with an exploration of spac- es that showcase color from the dusky to the dramatic: fin- ishes that sound ready to be served for dessert, metallics that nearly vanish into seas of blue and green, and plenty more ways to make your next project pop. ■

REFINED LINES R efining literally refers to the process of perfecting—usually by removing impurities from some precious substance such as metal or petroleum. But while the results of that kind of refinement can be tested with relative certainty, when it comes to measuring personal refinement—as in possessing a sense of elegance, taste, precision, or subtlety—it can be a bit harder to define. IN SEARCH OF SUBTLE ELEGANCE T E X T STEWART KELLER

So we took a look at the latest and greatest offer- ings from some of our favorite brands in search of this elusive quality. What we found includes thoughtful combinations of texture lending spa-like grandeur to the bath, moments of contrast shaking things up in the kitchen, and designs that allow the rich natural pat- terns of stone and wood to shine through. Talk to a designer about ways to bring an elevated sense of refinement to your home. It may be tricky to define, but you’ll feel it when you see it. ■

KraftMaid’s Marquette cabinet doors have a classic look, with a raised center panel and ogee profile edge. The style comes in five different woods and a multitude of color options. T he question of cabinets can be a daunting one, especially in today’s open-plan, visible-from-every-corner kitchen layouts. In addition to considering how much storage is needed, as well as style and color, other questions bubble to the surface: Do you want to display treasures on open shelving or hide them all away? Tall cabinets or undercounter only? What kind of lighting will you need? Durability, functionality, budget— all of these questions need to be answered before a single cabinet is hung. Fortunately, most established cabinetry brands offer design help, not just with kitchens but anywhere else cabinetry is required. Key to the process is hiring a good designer who understands your vision for your home (and who knows how to measure).

In the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) 2026 Annual Kitchen Trends report, a whopping 76% of respondents believe the kitchen footprint will expand over the next three years, and that the kitchen will con- tinue to influence the décor and design of the rest of the home. Bill Darcy, global president and CEO of NKBA | KBIS shares, “The 2026 Trends Report further confirms [that] homeowners desire connection and cohesive design between spaces for entertainment, functionality, and wellness.” The experts agree: Our kitchens continue to be the most important room in the house, and that room needs both style and storage. Whether your tastes run toward traditional or modern (or any style in between), be honest with your designer about how you function to get the kitchen you need and let them guide you through the details to create one that you love. ■

My dad was into carpentry as a hobby. I watched him work on projects growing up. Is there a common thread that runs through more than one of your designs—a style, a mood, a type of gesture? I enjoy having my fixtures, accessories, and hardware com- plementing each other. Making sure designs are functional for my clients is always a priority when designing. What’s something you find clients are always asking you for? Clients are constantly asking me for assurance on their selections: “Does this look good? Do these work together? Do you like this?” On what element of a design project do you most recommend a client invest in a higher-end option if possible? I would recommend the powder room sink or faucet. Make a statement in your powder room! I have been loving the character a wall-mounted concrete sink can give a powder room. When you need a pick-me-up, how do you give yourself a treat? A little shopping for clothing—especially shoes.

THE GOAL WAS A MODERN RETREAT THAT BALANCES REFINEMENT WITH LIVABILITY.

T E X T PAUL HAGEN

Weisz notes that the mirror arches echo the curves of the Brizo fixtures.

W hile we love new builds, there’s something uniquely exciting about a full ren- ovation—taking an exist- ing space and completely transforming it,” says designer Heather Weisz of HW Interiors, which she founded with Lisa Hynes. “It’s where our design philosophy shines: thoughtful, layered, and always tailored to how people live and experience a home.” Weisz gave us behind-the-scenes dish about two dramatic renovations that she and the HW Interiors team tackled. They call the first an “Equestrian Abode” in honor of its animal-loving occupants—though when it came to reimagin- ing the space, there was no horsing around. “From our very first conversations with our client, the priority was clear: open the space, invite in natural light, and create a home that felt both beautiful and highly functional,” says Weisz. “The existing layout felt compartmen- talized, so we focused on establishing flow and connection while ensuring every space worked effortlessly for daily living and entertaining.” Naturally, function in the room where most entertaining begins was of primary importance. “For us, a beautifully designed kitchen always begins with workflow. It has to support the way the homeowners actually live and entertain— the flow between prep, cooking, gathering, and serving should feel intuitive,” says Weisz. The team also wanted the design to shine. “Early on, we envisioned the marble waterfall island and bar as the defining moment, sculp- tural and grounding—allowing the stone to be the star while layering in tailored millwork and soft tonal contrasts to support it,” says Weisz. “The handmade zellige backsplash tile further complements the marble, offering texture and depth.” Weisz notes that using soft brass fix- tures throughout helped the space feel curat- ed. “From the Kohler plumbing fittings to the accent decorative lighting, that warmth subtly elevates the palette without overpowering it.” Meanwhile in the bathroom, a series of PHOTOGRAPHY JESSICA GLYNN AND PAOLA QUEVEDO SANTOS

arches and arched mirrors create a sense of softness. “The arches in the primary bath were added to introduce architectural interest and a soft, feminine touch that reflects our client,” says Weisz. “Their curves are echoed in the Brizo fixtures and complemented by tailored vanities and countertops, keeping the design balanced.” She notes that a marble mosaic with brass accents also highlights the hard- ware. “The result is a space that feels layered, cohesive, and effortlessly elegant.” Throughout the home, Weisz introduced natural, handmade elements to elevate it from pretty to artful. “Materials with subtle variation and craftsmanship bring soul and depth, cre- ating a layered environment where every detail feels considered,” she says. Weisz adds that the laid-back luxury of their equestrian clients was also a major inspiration. She knew their home needed to perpetually welcome them home from the barn to gather with friends and furry companions. T he other project Weisz discussed with us was in picturesque Puerto Rico. “We were thrilled to design this project at the Ritz-Carlton residence in Dorado Beach,” says Weisz. “Our focus was on maximizing the lush, natural surroundings and ensuring the color palette and materials felt completely connected to the exterior.” The goal was a full gut renovation that would modernize the interior and give the property new life. They wanted the home to feel artful while still incorporating touches of whimsy fitting for a vacation retreat—including lighting installations crafted from organic ma- terials, jewelry-like plumbing, and vibrant tile. The team even found a way to bring fun to one of the home’s most purpose-driven rooms. “Having seven kids between us, Lisa and I know a thing or two about laundry!” says Weisz. “For us, it’s all about making the mundane extraor- dinary—if you can enhance your surroundings, even everyday tasks become enjoyable. We had fun with the flooring; the custom text in the tile is so playful and adds personality and ‘fresh- ness’. The wall-mounted custom blue sink echoes the floor, and one of our favorite wall- mount Watermark faucets blends function with playful, thoughtful design.” Weisz calls the primary bath a true Cin- derella story. “The space was dark, dated, and lacked flow,” she says. “Our goal was to create a spa-like retreat that maximized the lush

green views and brought a sense of serenity. Mag- nificent plumbing fixtures, carefully curated light- ing, and luminous marble keep the space feeling light, timeless, and elevated. The soaking tub and shower are arranged to feel like a wet room.” Meanwhile, the team sought to give each guest bath its own personality using elements like bold wallcoverings, tailored vanities, and striking sconc- es, but they maintained a cohesiveness via certain unifying elements. “The Watermark plumbing fix- tures set a high standard, elevating each bathroom with their craftsmanship,” she notes. Such a project called for a grand finale. “We brought our entire team to install,” says Weisz. “At the end, we all paused to relax and soak in the beautiful saltwater, lush surroundings, and serene atmosphere Dorado offers. It’s always rewarding to see a vision fully realized.” ■
