8 TIPS TO AVOID A SPORTS INJURY Participation in athletic activities of all kinds, at all ages, is at an all-time high. Accordingly, sports injuries are also on the rise. However, many injuries can be avoided. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, up to 50 percent of all athletic injuries can be avoided. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases conservatively estimates that athletic injury rates could be reduced by 25 percent if all athletes followed essential safety, conditioning and preventive strategies. The following tips are meant as a guide to the pursuit of that goal.
1. Warm up and stretch before you start. 2. Wear proper protective gear. 3. Use proper form. 4. Hydrate. 5. Don’t overdo it. 6. Cross train when possible. 7. If injuries occur, don’t play when you’re injured.
8. Finally, remember RICE: rest, ice, compression, and elevation, the best treatment for an acute injury. In many cases a course of physical therapy may be needed. Don’t hesitate to call for a FREE CONSULT should injury occur.
Good luck and play safe!
PATIENT OF THE MONTH
Introducing our Patient of the Month Gloria! Gloria first came to us in 2004 when we opened our clinic and has witnessed our growth and expansion throughout the years. She was first referred to OBTS to treat her back pain. She felt a constant pain underneath her shoulder blade that would not go away. After being treated with different modalities, the pain disappeared leaving her pleased knowing she might return another year… and she did return! Gloria returned to OBTS to work on the balance issues she was experiencing. She was having difficulty walking long distances and using stairs due to her fear of falling. Gloria used our Balance Master Testing Machine and was our first patient to ever call the machine “FUN”! Later, she admitted it was also challenging. One of Gloria’s favorite exercises was the clamshells. She found these hard to do and MEET GLORIA!
knew they were strengthening her legs due to the burning muscle sensation she felt. Gloria recently completed her physical therapy program and stated her overall experience to be excellent! She feels comfortable with our staff and has developed great relationships with all of us. Gloria looks forward to walking distances, quilting, and enjoying events with friends. As our Patient of the Month, Gloria has chosen to donate $100 to The Concordia Seminary School. She has chosen this school because one of her fourteen grandchildren is a student. Gloria not only has fourteen grandchildren, but also fifteen great grandchildren! Her family can be proud of all her hard work while completing therapy! Thank you for being a wonderful patient Gloria!
