There was a famous judge in this country who was an atheist. One night his wife was away from home and con viction got hold of him concerning his wrong relation to God and things what were spiritual and real and he was thinking this through while he was there alone. When she came home he was not through thinking yet. She tried to get him to go to bed but he would not go. He knew it was of no use. He was up all night, pacing up and down the floor. Early the next morning he went to his law office, locked the door and said he was not to see anybody and he made a resolution that he would not go through that door again until he found the truth about Christ. He dropped on his knees and began to pray. He had been brought up a Unitarian and believed that Christ was only a man so when he dropped on his knees he said, “Oh God, have mercy and save me!” He kept crying that over and over again but no relief came. Then something told him to say “Oh God, for Jesus’ sake, save me.” He said, “X cannot do it. I will not do it.” He tells the story of how he literally laid on his face on the floor to get relief and he could only say “Oh, God, save me,” Finally out of the limit; of his agony he burst out, “Oh God, for Jesus’ sake save me.” “Oh,” he said, “how the light broke and heaven came into that office.” Something had happened and the good God had come to the relief and transformed his whole life and from that day he was one of the kingliest men the church ever knew. He found no relief until he recognized that Jesus Christ was the Son of God. “If you believe not that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, ye shall die in your sin.” . esh HOW SCIENCE CHANGES FRONT (Continued from Page 136) thropoid ape. But now such a view is intolerable; man has not descended or ascended from any known monkey or ape; man and the simians all trace their pedigree back to an unknown animal which is the common ancestor of both. This makes the theory much more palatable, because it pushes the origin of the human race away back into the region of the unknown; only the scientists seem to forget that, if this new theory is true, man came from an animal still lower in the scale than the present-day monkeys and apes, because they have developed to their present ad vanced status from their primeval primate stock. Here is another shift in the speculations of the scientist. Professor Albert Bateson, at the Toronto meeting of scientists, referred to the aplomb with which scientists in Darwin’s day accepted his doctrine of the origin of species; but now, Bateson says, that assurance is all given up, and the origin of pecies is wrapped in obscurity, so that we must now accept evolution “by faith.” Is science semper idem? Does it never change? The history of science is strewn with the wrecks of discarded theories and hypotheses. Who knows what changes to morrow will bring? Biblical believers have never been compelled to turn so many somersaults. Basically they have had all along the unchanging truth of the unchanging Christ and the infallible Word of God. It is not necessary for them to abandon the doctrines of special creations, supernatural revelation, the virgin birth and deity of Jesus Christ, and other fundamental truths, until the scientists reach something like stabilized conclusions rest ing on an empirical basis.
