p o w e r A nd a c t s o f t h e h o l y s p ir it (Continued from Page 138) make this clear. Paul said, “John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him, which should come after him, that is Jesus Christ.” When they heard this, they (be came Christians) were BAPTIZED in the NAME of the Lord Jesus.” Paul’s first question correctly translated is, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed?” (R. V. v. 2 ). These disciples were not believers on a crucified Christ up to that time, hence they were Jews. After their conversion they were baptized. Then Paul mediated their baptism with the Spirit. “And when Paul laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came upon them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.” (Verse 6). This cor responds to the laying on of hands with other Jewish con versions as recorded between Pentecost (Acts 2) and Pe ter’s vision (Acts 10). V I I .— The Outstanding Fact. From the opening of the door of the kingdom to the Gentiles (Acts 10:44-48) until now, faith in the Lord Jesus and the baptism with the Holy Spirit are simultan eous facts. Paul or Peter or James or John or Jude never mention once that believers are to seek the baptism with the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:14-17). Paul assured Christians (believers) “That by one Spirit, they are baptized into one body, and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.” (1 Cor. 12:J.3). “After that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise.” (Eph. 1 :13 ). All Christians are baptized with the Spirit but all are not filled with the Spirit. The modern confusion relative to this phase of the Spirit’s work is due to confusing to gether two separate and distinct operations of the Holy Spirit, the Baptism and the Filling. The baptism with the Spirit is to unite the believer to the body of Christ and to impart gifts for service (1 Cor. 12:7-20). The filling with the Spirit gives blessing in life and power in service (Acts 6:7, 13:52 ). The crying need among Christians is not for the baptism with the Spirit but the filling with the Spirit which Paul exhorts Christians to have (Eph. 5 :18 ).
