THE BEST WAY TO CELEBRATE MYSTERY MONTH

Host a Murder Mystery Dinner!

Did you know May is Mystery Month? There are dozens of ways to celebrate this enigmatic occasion, from playing Clue to rewatching “Glass Onion” — but why not bring those experiences to life and host your own murder mystery dinner at home? Thanks to a plethora of kits on the market, doing so is easier than ever! What is a murder mystery dinner?

If your friends and family don’t like the idea of acting and dressing up, that’s okay — you can still solve a mystery over dinner! Look into kits available through Unsolved Case Files (UnsolvedCaseFiles.com) or Hunt A Killer (Shop.HuntAKiller.com), which involve collaborative mystery-solving without the character work. Step 2: Curate your guest list.

A murder mystery dinner is essentially a real-life game of Clue. You invite friends over for dinner and turn your home into the set of “Knives Out” — without the blood, of course. Each of your friends takes on the persona of a character in the story, and when one of them is “murdered,” you compete to uncover who dunnit. Step 1: Pick your kit. Planning a murder mystery dinner from scratch would take the ingenuity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Luckily, you have several ready-made mysteries to

Most murder mystery dinners require at least four people, while some include characters for six, eight, or more! Check the number of players on your kit and invite your most creative, analytical, theatrical, and mystery- loving friends.

Step 3: Decorate and plan the menu. If you choose a themed murder mystery,

level up your event with a matching menu and decor! For games taking place in England, whip up a shepherd’s pie and make a cardboard cutout of Big Ben. For Havana Nights, plan a build-your-own Cubano bar and throw on an Afro-Cuban playlist. You can be

Night of Mystery (NightOfMystery.com), for example, sells both in-person and virtual kits with themes ranging from ‘80s prom to Christmas homicide.

Mary Ann Is Dedicated to Bettering the Lives of Our Youth! ADAM’S MOM’S SELFLESS MISSION

It’s often said that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Adam’s mother, Mary Ann, just like Adam, is an incredibly active, caring, kind, giving, and resourceful individual. Her passion is helping children in our community through the Kiwanis’ nonprofit organization; she’s been a member since Adam’s daughter was 3 months old — and that was nearly 10 years ago! “I joined Kiwanis because I was a schoolteacher all my life, and I found myself missing the opportunity to be able to interact with kids,” Mary Ann tells us. “Kiwanis’ main function is supporting children and families internationally, and we have a very active group here in Atlantic Beach.” Mary Ann’s local Kiwanis group is small, but they certainly make a big splash in the community with their hands in many different pots to make a difference in the lives of the neighborhood children. From participating in group activities in schools to hosting fundraisers, Kiwanis members have a blast helping children raise money to put back into their schools and donate to causes of their choice. The children have an opportunity to learn about the community and how to support it through compassion and leadership skills. “It’s amazing to see what these children can do,” Mary Ann remarks. The Kiwanis group has hosted Thanksgiving dinners for seniors in the Jacksonville Beach area, where teenagers from local high schools wait tables. They host breakfasts for honor students

and even throw Halloween parties at the Sulzbacher Center, a comprehensive homeless facility. Mary Ann served as president of the Kiwanis Club for a year and a half. During her time served, the group achieved a $10,000 grant, which they donated to fund a project to build permanent outdoor musical instruments accessible to all children.

“We are a small club and always looking for new members to join the Kiwanis family and assist in our mission,” Mary Ann tells us. “We meet at Atlantic Beach Barbeque at 8 a.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.” If you or someone you know is interested in joining, please feel free to contact Mary Ann at 704-619-6049 or by visiting Kiwanis on Facebook or online at Kiwanis.org. We are humbled by Mary Ann’s selfless initiative and thank her and the entire Kiwanis group for their hard work and dedication to bettering the lives of our youth!
