Natural Gas

Natural gas usage has remained flat in recent years. The FY26 Natural Gas budget of 2,250,944 shops is a $145,253(6%) decrease from the FY25 budget. This decrease is mainly due to the following reasons: o Following construction completion this summer, 150 Jackson Rd (Lincoln Elliot) will be a fully eclectic building starting September 2025, significantly reducing our gas usage and costs. o The Horace Man building will be under construction, with utilities covered by the construction company. o As of May 2025, the City of Newton has an open bid for a new gas supplier, as part of the statewide contract administered by the Mass Operational Services Division (OSD). A new contract is to go into effect in November 2025 and OSD is expecting a 21% reduction in gas prices which would mean a modest reduction in our gas supply rates for FY26 and the remainder of the contract.
Other Utilities

In FY25, only one Newton school building still used oil to heat their building - Peirce Elementary. The FY26 oil budget will decrease slightly to reflect actual anticipated need at Peirce Elementary School.
Diesel and gasoline are also slightly decreasing to reflect actual spending trends and anticipated need.
Telecommunications are audited every few years and unused phone lines are removed, which has allowed expenses to modestly decrease in this area as well.
