Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS)
MCAS is the student academic assessment program in the state of Massachusetts. MCAS became non-mandatory for high school graduation following a ballot initiative passed in November 2024.
Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 (MERA)
The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 (MERA) was a comprehensive law that significantly increased the state's role in public education funding and oversight. It aimed to improve student achievement by setting high standards, increasing accountability, and ensuring equitable funding across districts. Key components included the introduction of charter schools, the implementation of the MCAS standardized testing system, and a focus on Outcomes Based Education Session Laws or sections of Session Laws that are permanent in nature and of general application. General Laws are codified according to subject matter in a multi-volume publication entitled the General Laws of Massachusetts.

Administers the state program that reimburses cities, towns, and regional school districts varying percentages of their school construction costs depending on the community’s or district’s wealth and the category of reimbursement.

McKinney-Vento Services
Services rendered to a student who is homeless as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act's definition of "homeless children and youth," 42 USC 11434(a)(2). The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is a federal law that was first enacted in 1987. A certain percentage of the funds go to school districts. Transportation of a homeless student to and from the student's school of origin that is located outside of the boundaries of the school district in which the homeless student temporarily resides. For purposes of homeless student transportation, school of origin shall mean the school where the homeless student was last enrolled, or the school attended when the student was permanently housed
