Advanced Placement (AP) An established, nationally recognized program, Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer students the opportunity to undertake more complex and challenging college-level course work while still in high school. Newton offers a strong Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum to our students with more than 16 AP courses. In the 2024-2025 school year, 1,351 students at North & South High Schools in Newton took a total of 3,167 AP exams. With a scoring system of 5 (extremely qualified) to 1 (no recommendation), Newton students continue to excel on AP exams with 91% of tests taken receiving a score of three or higher. The table 10 below provides a six-year historical view of AP results by year. Over a ten-year period, Newton Public Schools maintained a four-year high school graduation rate of 95.94%, 7.6 percentage points above the state average of 88.31%. Dropouts are defined as students who leave school prior to graduation for reasons other than transfer to another school. The dropout rate for Newton Public Schools increased to 1 percent in 2024 from 0.9 percent in 2023. Statewide, the dropout rate has remained at 5.3% for 2023 and 2024.
