Newton Public Schools FY26 Digital Budget Book

The Local Newton Considerations

The Newton FY26 budget landscape includes five major consideration areas in keeping with the state budget landscape shown above and expounded upon below.

1. Use of $22 Million Education Stabilization Funding

As noted above, the establishment and use of the Educational Stabilization Account is essential in balancing our FY26 budget by covering base operational costs. The fund, which began with $22 million dollars in FY25, had $4.1 million allocated to NPS to hire key positions related to reducing class size (moving high school science, technology, math and engineering classes below 28 students) identified by Dr. Anna Nolin and to help balance the NPS budget in FY25. In the Fall of 2024, the Mayor added an additional $2 million dollars from free cash into the Education Stabilization, which has a current balance of approximately $20.9 Million dollars at the time of this writing. The FY26 allocation from the mayor is $4,249,650 of the Education Stabilization Account.
