SERM Venting a dryer is an integral part of what allows the machine to work. As clothes dry in the tumbler, water vapor evaporates from the fabric. This vapor needs to be removed from the system. In most cases, exhaust byproducts are moved through a dryer vent that terminates on the exterior of one of the home’s walls. This wide-open exhaust port is a common entry point for several species of nuisance wildlife. Home builders typically add louvered or hooded vents over the exhaust port to keep these critters out. Wildlife can adapt easily to these relatively flimsy covers, though, and often gain access anyway.

For this reason, wildlife control operators suggest adding an aftermarket dryer vent cover for further protection against nuisance wildlife.

SERM-EXT The problem with most aftermarket covers, though, is that they don’t meet the ICC® code . They utilize tight, interlocking meshes that do well to keep out critters, but also allow lint to accumulate inside the cover. This lint buildup reduces ventilation, causing dryer strain and underperformance, and drastically increases the chance of a dryer fire ! SERM WITH 3 QTY. SERM-EXT KITS ADDED HY-GUARD EXCLUSION®’s Code Compliant Dryer Exhaust VentGuards™ utilize code-compliant vertical bars that both prevent lint buildup and eliminate wildlife entry to serve the dual functions of fire prevention and wildlife exclusion . Not all jurisdictions require code-compliant dryer exhaust covers. But using a cover that’s up to code is an industry best-practice solution to ensure proper dryer function, the prevention of lint buildup, and the exclusion of nuisance wildlife. So yes, we'd say that 'code-compliant' really is a big deal!
