“Even if the committee doesn’t wield

Club captains The first club captain was appointed in the founding year of 1972, followed in 1973 by the appointment of the first ladies captain. There had been a five-day committee at the club since 1977, with Dawson Whitman as its first chairman. In 2020, to provide more of a focus for senior members (many of whom were five-day members), the club created a senior men’s section. This took over from the five-day committee and included the creation of a senior men’s captain. In recognition of his many years of service to the five-day committee, Mervyn Hardman was appointed as the first to hold this role.

The 50th anniversary year captains are: Men’s captain John Tugwell Ladies captain Sue Jenkins Senior men’s captain Ian Schwartz. Each is supported by their committees of willing and enthusiastic volunteers. The captain’s job isn’t all front-of-house. Backstage there are committee meetings to chair, plus club and competition diaries to co-ordinate. Even if the committee doesn’t wield absolute power at Badgemore, that doesn’t prevent some animated debate. But the committee members know that decisions have to be made and these always have the benefit to the membership front of mind.
