Badgemore Anniversary Book

FOUNDING MEMBERS

In its 50th year, the club is blessed to count among the membership those who were founder members or who joined in the very first few years following opening. As a part of the preparation for the golden anniversary year in 2022, and to enable the memories of these pioneering members to be captured, the club laid on a traditional afternoon tea in the Coach House and invited them to come along and share their stories. More than 30 members came along on Wednesday, 17 November 2021, and these pages show the thoughts and anecdotes that they shared with us. What was clear to see was that most of them were still regular players (proving that golf is good for you!) and that Badgemore has meant a lot to them over the years. We were able to take lots of photographs on the day and we share a selection of them here alongside the many happy memories.

Before the large number of trees were planted, the defence of the course was through the length of the rough. We used to be told not to put down your bag in the rough when looking for a ball – you might not find your bag again! CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: JUNE GAFFNEY AND GORDON HANNAM, JOHN BOWERS, JOHN MCCONNELL, IAN SCHWARTZ AND BRUCE KENDALL

The indoor riding school that was right up to the edge of the 16th fairway – and bouncing the ball off the roof onto the green!
