University Challenge, Summer Holiday, Quintessential English Lady and many more. Not to be outdone, the men’s incoming vice-captain has put together a brief sketch for the new captain at his drive-in. From Terry and Marion Denby arriving at the first tee on a tandem (they were the first husband and wife to be men’s and ladies captain in the same year), to David Weston turning up in surgical scrubs and John Grace in a Skeletour suit, there have been some excellent themes to brighten up what is usually a cold and frosty January morning. 2022 saw a much inflated ‘Captain Shruggers’, John Tugwell, attempting to take his swing while maintaining a gargantuan shrug. Captain’s away trip During his year as captain in 2008, David Lyle had the great idea for a three-day away trip with a group of club members. ‘It’s grim up North’ tour to Shrigley Hall near Macclesfield in the Peak District.
‘Grim up North’ – the first tour we recall By goodness they all had a ball A great new tradition 2022’s the 15th edition David Lyle – a big thank you from all
The tour was such a resounding success that it has been continued by the men’s captain each year since. The groups have consisted of between 30 and 40 and it has been a well-supported annual event. The appropriate tour names are usually assigned by the vice-captain, with inputs from past captains. What other name could have been given to Dr David Weston’s tour other than ‘Drop and Cough?’
