“The trips have certainly covered a wide range of golf courses over the past 20 years”

Putt out At David Weston’s drive-in in 2018, our newest tradition was introduced. Prior to the incoming captain’s drive on the first tee, the outgoing captain Dave Haddock putted out on the 18th green. The length and line of the putt is duly selected by Jon Connell, (normally a slippery downhill 10-footer!) and after careful consideration of golfing handicap and conditions, Jon gives odds as to whether the putt is likely to be made or not. The size of the donation to the captain’s charity is reliant on whether the outgoing men’s captain masters the challenge. Needless to say, single-figure handicapper Dave failed to make the putt leaving himself with a two-and-a-half-foot return attempt! To date, David Weston is the sole success. This needs to change.

In most cases, the tours were played on the courses at the resorts where the groups stayed. The Bowood tour’s first round was at The Manor while the Bournemouth Tour was fortunate enough to be played over Ferndown, Parkstone and Remedy Oak. It was at Remedy Oak that Manjit Ahluwalia arranged for local resident and club member Harry Redknapp to be there at the clubhouse to greet Danny Fois when he finished his round! It should be mentioned in dispatches that David Haddock remains to date the only captain to have remained ‘capable enough’ to win his own tour! Lady captain’s away trip Leading the way, the lady captains started their annual away trips in 2002. A day of golf, fun, laughter, and friendship, the trips have certainly covered a wide range of golf courses over the past 20 years.
