YOUNG BLOOD
“Badgemore has been very fortunate over the years to have attracted a good number of younger players into the club”
Golf club membership across the UK is heavily biased towards the more mature golfer. In 2020, it was reported that only 13 per cent of UK golf club members were aged under 30, while 68 per cent of members were over 50. To ensure the future of golf club membership, it is vital therefore that clubs find ways of attracting and maintaining younger members. Badgemore has been very fortunate over the years to have attracted a good number of younger players into the club, some of whom have gone on to establish their careers in the game and others who have become excellent low-handicap players.
A look at the men’s club championship results in 2021 provides a great insight into the health of the younger membership and level of skill at Badgemore. The outcome was decided in a playoff between +1 handicapper John Routledge and 2 handicapper Calum Miller. In fact, seven of the top 10 players were younger, single-figure handicappers at the club: 1st John Routledge handicap +1 2nd Calum Miller handicap 2 4th Leo Allen handicap 4 5th Jake Elias handicap 4 6th Arron Stevens handicap 3
