During Obama’s tenure, U.S. coal production and consumption plummeted. From 2009 to 2016, the country produced almost 35% less coal. Consumption followed a similar downtrend in that span.

His strict opposition to the industry played a big part of that, but the influx of natural gas into the market was key in this steep decline.

However, the coal industry’s fortunes have changed since Donald Trump became president.

In February 2017, Trump rolled back the Stream Protection Rule. And he continued his changes a month later with an executive order that called for the EPA to review Obama’s “Clean Power Plan.” That initiative attempted to limit greenhouse gas emissions at coal-fired power plants, and it has crushed the industry over the past couple of years.
