AUTUMN ACTIVITIES Fall is the time for bonfires, brisk hikes, and walks through freshly fallen leaves. If you’re wearing a prosthetic or orthotic, it’s also time to make sure your device is in top condition so you’re ready to enjoy all your favorite fall activities. Call our office today to see how we can get your orthotic or prosthetic in the best shape possible! Make Sure to Plan Ahead Whether you’re wearing orthotics (braces, inserts, and supports) or a prosthetic (artificial limbs), it’s necessary to plan ahead for any activity you’re going to participate in. If you’re going to be outdoors and exploring new areas that you’re unfamiliar with, you may want to make sure your activity is completed before dark. What foods you bring or eat ahead of time can have a greater impact on howwell your orthotic or prosthetic may fit than you realize. Dairy products, processed foods, and excessive salt or sugar can cause inflammation. This can result in devices not fitting as well and problems with the socket. There are several great snacks that are easy to prepare, carry, and normally cause little to no inflammation. • Bananas are one of the healthiest and easiest snacks to bring along. • Grapes and raisins are sweet as well as low in calories. • Almonds, pistachios, and most seeds are great alone or for making a yummy trail mix. • Dark chocolate is great-tasting and anti-inflammatory.

Pack Light but Smart You don’t want to haul around a heavy backpack when you’re enjoying outdoor activities, but you’ll definitely want to bring along the essentials. This will probably include bringing an extra pair of fitted socks and some cream or chafe guard. It’s important to remember that during the fall months it can still be quite warm during the day but much cooler in the evening. If you’re going to be out for a long period of time, it’s important to dress in layers. Have Your Device Checked It’s essential to make sure your prosthetic or orthotic is clean, adjusted correctly, and fitting as snugly as possible. Before engaging in any new activity or embarking on an extensive outdoor adventure, it’s a good idea to make an appointment to have your device checked out. Even if it’s an activity you’re used to, it’s still important to have any type of prosthetic or orthotic device regularly checked and maintained by a professional. Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics provide a complete range of orthotic and prosthetic services. They create their devices in-house and provide customized fittings and evaluations. Whether you’re ready to engage in a touch football game or enjoy an evening hayride, Howard Orthotics and Prosthetics can get your devices in the best shape possible.
