Supervisors’ Response to Subordinate Social Issue Advocacy Jacob Whitney

SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

This study aims to explore subordinate social issue advocacy, or when subordinates pressure their supervisors to take action on broader social issues (i.e., issues that aim to advance social welfare). Although the literature has examined when organizations take a broad stance on such issues, such discussions between supervisors and their subordinates are largely absent from the management literature. In this study, we examine what occurs when subordinates pressure their supervisors on responding to sociopolitical issues. We intend to answer two main questions: 1) How do supervisors respond when subordinates pressure them to engage sociopolitical issues?; 2) Do supervisors take action and advocate for change following these interactions? Overall, this study aims to better understand whether subordinate social issue advocacy impacts supervisor behavior in the workplace.

Employees increasingly engaging their supervisors on broader social issues. are Supervisors may respond in different ways to subordinate social issue advocacy. Social change in organizations may originate in supervisor- subordinate relationships.

One of the ways that the Coles College encourages faculty research is by offering $10,000 fellowships each summer to new, junior, and senior faculty. Read on to learn more about the projects that Coles College faculty members will be working on throughout Summer 2026.
