Since 1807... In a world that’s changing faster than ever, it’s comforting that some things withstand the passage of time. It is over two centuries since Daniel Thwaites set out from his family’s Lake District farm to make a new life for himself, and the rest they say, is history. Daniel built up his brewery based on strong family values – an eye for quality and a generous blend of innovation, craftsmanship and warm hospitality. Who would have believed, six generations later, that his family would proudly continue the journey he started and remain faithful to his principles – still striving for brewing perfection, now with a growing collection of pubs, inns, hotels and spas. Above all, we know that with Thwaites, from our broad family of craft brewers in Lancashire, to our traditional Shire horses – still pulling their brewery drays, to our team members in properties up and down Britain – no matter where you find us, you will always be guaranteed a warm welcome from a friendly face.

Heart of England
The Heart of England is filled with beautiful market towns, glorious countryside, stately homes and history in abundance. Chester alone has over 550 listed buildings, spanning from medieval to Victorian times, all within the sandstone walls, which are the most complete set of city walls in the country. Moving south it’s the honeyed limestone that defines the Cotswolds, distinctive throughout its villages and in Cirencester, the capital of the Cotswolds. Much of the wealth in the Cotswolds was built up through the wool trade, and the impressive church of St John Baptist in Cirencester is a leading example of a ‘wool church’ as it was funded through donations from these wealthy merchants. Northamptonshire is known as the County of Spires and Squires – the Spires refer to the many churches and the Squires to the wealthy lords and landowners who built magnificent country mansions, many of which are now open houses and give a fascinating glimpse of past times.

Southern ports
Bristol has been a wealthy port since the Roman era, at the centre of the tobacco, wine and cotton trade, it’s always had an independent streak. To this day, it still has a local currency, the Bristol Pound, and local Bristol time, shown on the clock on the Corn Exchange – 10 minutes behind Greenwich Mean Time. What was once a busy dock where merchants set off for great adventures is now a busy, bustling harbourside with markets, water sports, cafes and world- class attraction. Head south to where naval heritage again plays a significant part in of both Portsmouth and Southampton. Nestled between the South Downs National Park and the New Forest, rolling hills, market towns, ancient woodlands and glorious heathland are ready to be explored on all sides. The Solent is a natural playground for watersports of every persuasion.
