Too Smart Q. Can a person have a high I.Q. and still be “mentally way o ff’? A. I wish I knew just what you meant by “ high I.Q.” and by “men tally way off.” They usually don’t go together. Studies of intellectually gifted peo ple indicate that they are usually well adjusted persons who are very successful in life. Too often the men tally gifted person has been pictured as a very peculiar person who could never fit into life and who finally found himself in some mental insti tution. Scientific studies show that this is absolutely untrue. Those who are intellectually gifted are com monly talented in many ways and blessed with a host of friends. It is possible, of course, for a person of high intellectuality to have a brain damage. I have worked with many boys and girls who were above aver age in intelligence but who had sus tained some type of brain injury. In other words they were originally intellectually superior, but through no fault of their own, one or more sections of the brain had been af fected, so that certain symptoms are now apparent. It is quite possible that by your term “mentally way off” you may refer to a very intelligent, competent person who is emotionally upset and unstable. Most of us do not act in accordance with what we know but rather in accordance with how we feel. Anyone, whether above or be low average in intelligence, may be mildly or severely emotionally upset because of experiences that he has had. In such cases one might be rec ognized as bright but also mal adjusted. Another case of a person who is very bright but who is maladjusted is one who is suffering from poor men tal health. Such poor health may be the result of a physical ailment, a psychological difficulty or a combina tion of the two. Mental illness takes its toll on both the intellectually gifted and the intellectually retarded, as well as the average.

The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge . . . now 15 volumes

The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge is internationally recognized as the standard encyclopedia of religion in the English language. As such it has had a long history of unexcelled leadership. In order that it may continue to fill its role of useful service, this valuable set has now been completely modernized, both as to form and content. This project was headed by an Editorial Staff of the most outstanding religious leaders to collaborate on a major publication in this century. Each'Department Editor is a recognized authority in his field, a noted scholar, and an able writer. Under this leadership every article in the thirteen-volume encyclopedia was subjected to careful examination to determine the need for supplementation or revision. Hundreds of new entries were prepared. Collaborating with the Editorial Staff was the cream of the world’s religious scholarship. Two large volumes of supplementary material were thus added to the existing set. The result — a -fifteen-volume encyclopedia of religion as completely up-to-date as the choice of the world’s scholarship can make it! Here is a religious reference work which should be on the shelf of every library in America, public or private. No religious leader, student, or educator can afford to do without it!
