Ont of the Lab

Donald S. Robertson, Ph.D. Chairman, Dept, of Science, Biola Bible College

Stars and M any have accused science of de stroying faith in God. Perhaps this accusation is partly justified, but to one who sees science as the description of God’s creation and how it functions, science can give a deeper insight into the power and majesty of God. For example, in David’s day he looted toward the heavens on a starry night and proclaimed, “ O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens . . . When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Ps. 8:1, 3, 4). But what would David have thought if he had known all that the modem astronomer knows about the heavens? In David’s day he could only look out with the naked eye and see the stars that make up our Milky Way system. Since he did not have the use of modem telescopes, he had no way of knowing the full extent of this system. Today science tells us that it is made up of an estimated one hundred million suns (stars) which are arranged in a giant lens-shaped structure called a galaxy. The diam eter of our galaxy is so great that it would take light traveling at 186,285 miles per second 80,000 years to cross its greatest diameter and about 16,000 years to traverse it at its axis. But this is only the beginning, for scientists using the powerful tele scopes of today have found that by

Galaxies looking out between the stars of our galaxy they could find other galaxies in outer space. Our closest neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy which can just barely be seen with the naked eye, has been estimated to be about two million light years away (i.e., it would take light two million years to cross the distance between our Milky Way system and the Andro meda galaxy). These galaxies or is land universes are by no means rare, for it has been estimated that there are some 500 million or more within the range of the 200-inch telescope on Mt. Palomar, each with its mil lions of stars. Truly today we can begin to glimpse how right God was when He said, “ . . . the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured . . .” (Jer. 33:22). What a privilege is ours to live in the time when so much is known about God’s creation. To the Chris tian these discoveries take on greater significance when it is realized that the Lord Jesus Christ is the One Who created all this (John 1), and that it is His power that is responsible for sustaining all these myriads of stars, “ And he is before all things, and by him all things consist” (Col. 1:17). What a Saviour! The One who set these billions of stars in motion and is this day responsible for their very existence is the One Who “ . . . hum bled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:8), for your salvation and mine. END.
