the other bank, crawled up the mud dy slope, and through the trees and bushes he could see the missionary house and school. Now he ran; sure enough there was the missionary near the house with a pistol on his belt — for the Martins lived in a district where terrible Indians killed people. These were the enemies of the tribe to which Juan belonged. The missionary laughed and talked with Juan and then he could see that the boy wanted to say something. “ Come fellow,” said Mr. Martin, “ let’s go in the school house.” There, Mr. Martin turned to Juan, “ Tell me, why are your eyes shining so much today.” Juan suddenly got very shy and after a little coaxing he finally said, “ Senor Martin, I have a little gift for you.” He gave him the two eggs, a little dirty, but two good eggs even at that. Mr. Martin thanked him and still Juan hesitated. Finally he blurted, “ This is the best day of my life. I am no longer afraid of snakes, malaria, the witch doctor, the river nor the enemy tribe of Indians. Today in my little house as I was thinking about all you told me — somehow all of a sudden I knew I was different. My bad heart turned white and today, Senor Martin, I am a Jesus-boy.” Well, we can’t describe how won derful Mr. Martin felt as he stood at the edge of the mission property and watched Juan slip over the side of the hill on his way down to the river. Finally the missionary turned and en tered his bamboo house. He sat down at the desk right next to the play pen in the front room where his own baby son was playing. He picked up some paper and a pen and began to write a letter back home. As he start ed to put down the date, he realized that this was Thanksgiving Day. And with real thanksgiving he wrote the letter home about the ninth Indian in the tribe coming to know Jesus Christ as Saviour.
