Dec. 4, 1955 Meaning of Discipleship Luke 9:23-36 Pointers on the Lesson It is easy enough to bear the name Christian. One can do that by merely signing a card or joining a church. It is quite another thing to be a true disciple of Jesus. The people of the Sardis church in the Book of Revelation bore the name, but we are told that they were spiritually dead. They did not know the meaning of Christian discipleship. A disciple is a learner, a follower of Jesus in the fullest sense of these terms. Today’s lesson should help us to know the meaning of being a disciple of Jesus. It means following Jesus in the way He leads. His way is uncovered to us in the Word of God. Thus if we want to know | Christ’s will we must be men and women of the Book. The Lord does not lead apart from" His Word. Discipleship also means cross bearing. Each follower of Jesus has his own cross to bear. It can be rejected but the true follower of Christ will want to hear it as a mark of his identification with Him in all that He came to do. Those who choose to follow Christ may seem to be the losers for a time, but God declares that they will be the victors (v. 24). Cost what it may, discipleship is worth more than the gain of a world i (v. 25). True disciples will never be ashamed of the Lord Jesus. They will be like the great apostle who said, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ” (Rom. 1;16). And, of course, he meant that He was not ashamed of the Christ who made the gospel possible. What about you? Discipleship Rewarded vv. 27-36 There are different ways of looking at this marvelous section. There is the dispensational aspect in which we find pictured before us the future millennial Discipleship Explained vv. 23-26 Discipleship includes self-denial.
