BREAK OUT OF THE BOX AVOID HIGHLY PROCESSED FOODS FOR BETTER HEALTH CellinoLaw.com February/March 2025 Advisor
Many people are still trying hard to keep their New Year’s resolutions this time of year.
It's easy to be tempted to get in your car and head for a drive-thru, but it is also possible to find fresh foods that are healthy and convenient to eat. I am very conscious of the importance of eating fresh vegetables, fruit, and real meat. I frequently make my own meals at home, which
certain additives to baked goods are banned in Europe, as they are cited as possible carcinogens. In the U.S., lobbyists have enough influence to allow these chemicals in our foods. If more people were keen to these dangers and voiced their concerns, maybe our elected representatives would do more to protect
My resolution this year? I’m focusing on avoiding the health hazards that accompany highly processed foods, as I have become much more conscious of the importance of eating fresh foods. I credit social media, where you can often find reports showing the dangers of processed foods and the benefits of eating a whole foods diet. I also turn to podcasts for information on health, diet, and exercise. I have 12 grandchildren, all of whom I try to instill a healthy relationship with food. My daughter recently took her two kids to a fast-food restaurant after an early release from school. My grandson came to my office afterward, happily eating french fries. While I certainly cannot critique my daughter on the food she allows her children to eat, I follow a different set of rules when I take my grandchildren out to eat. I will buy them a hamburger, but I won’t let them get french fries. I tell them french fries aren’t good for them. Did you know that when potatoes are deep- fried in the oil used by fast-food restaurants, a toxic chemical called aldehyde and acrolein is formed? This chemical is one of many carcinogens found in cigarette smoke. Although it may take 30 years for cancer to develop, why would you want to ingest foods that have the same carcinogens that cigarettes possess?
typically are comprised of cooking a grass- fed steak with fresh vegetables and fruit. As a grab-and-go item, I like avocados you can just cut open or buy packaged. I also subscribe to a service called ButcherBox, which offers fresh meat from grass-fed cows roaming the land rather than consuming processed feed with hormones and other unhealthy additives that aren’t healthy for the animal or us — the end consumer. If the label on a processed food product lists 17 different ingredients, including unfamiliar words you can’t spell or pronounce, you may want to rethink eating it. Research links ultra- processed foods to a higher rate of heart disease and death from multiple causes. Some processed food additives that U.S. regulators allow are banned in Europe. For example, some red and yellow food dyes allowed in American processed foods must carry warning labels across the pond, and
consumers. However, if Congress members don’t feel pressure from constituents, they tend to follow the lobbyists’ recommendations. Even though we spend more money on health care than any other nation, the World Bank ranks us 49th in life expectancy. U.S. life expectancy has dropped dramatically, partly because of high rates of diabetes and obesity. While the temptations of quick-fix meals are easy to succumb to in today’s hectic world, it may do us some good to eat more like our grandparents and prepare a balanced home- cooked meal most days. I still have hope that people will become more educated about the risks of processed foods over time. As we move deeper into 2025, I hope you are having success in sticking to your New Year’s resolutions and finding your own long-term health and wellness as best you can! I wish you a healthy 2025!

It’s common knowledge that sleep does a body good, but how much slumber affects our overall health may surprise you. Here are three of the most unexpected ways sleep impacts our everyday lives. LESS PILLOW TIME EQUALS MORE PAIN If you’re having trouble sleeping due to chronic pain, you may have unwittingly trapped yourself in a cycle that’s wreaking havoc on your body. A poll by the National Sleep Foundation revealed that two-thirds of respondents who noted experiencing persistent physical discomfort weren’t getting enough sleep at night. Additionally, a University of California, Berkeley study of 24 young adults determined that reduced sleep can disrupt the brain’s mechanisms for recognizing pain signals and relieving affected area(s). While losing sleep due to pain may be a classic chicken-or-the-egg scenario, it’s no secret that getting a proper night’s sleep is essential for restoring our bodies to proper health. SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS A DIET DESTROYER Are you having trouble losing weight? Cutting calories likely won’t help you achieve your goal if you’re cutting your sleep hours at the same time. Sleep deprivation negatively affects two of our body’s most important hormones: leptin and ghrelin. Leptin informs our brain when we’re full, while ghrelin lets it know when we’re hungry. The less we sleep, the longer we’re awake — and the more time ghrelin has to make us think about snacking. A lack of sleep may also make you feel too tired to hit the gym, causing you to lose out on another opportunity to keep your diet on course. THE SLUMBER-SUPPRESSING MUTATION Do you jump out of bed most mornings after sleeping six or fewer hours? You may be powered by a mutation in your family’s genetics. People who inherited a rare variation of the ADRB1 gene, which affects the coding of receptors that influence a person’s sleep-wake cycle, are likelier to start the day feeling fine despite having a shorter night’s rest than most people. That’s right — being a morning person may be built into your DNA! The Truth About Tuck-in Time SLEEP’S SURPRISING PERKS AND PITFALLS

Ryan’s career journey has been anything but ordinary, making his story an inspiring one to share.
A PASSION FOR SERVICE After graduating magna cum laude from Ithaca College in 2003, where he played varsity lacrosse, Ryan pursued a career he had his eyes set on since his youth — law. He enrolled at SUNY Buffalo School of Law with the goal of advocating for those in need. During law school, he served as president of the Student Bar Association, further solidifying his commitment to leadership and service. Upon earning his law degree in 2006, Ryan joined the U.S. Army, fulfilling a personal calling to serve his country. As a member of the Judge Advocate General Corps, he provided legal counsel to Army officers and staff during deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Qatar. He has over 17 years of combined service between the active component and reserve. BUILDING EXPERIENCE Ryan’s legal career continued at Gibson, McAskill, and Crosby in Buffalo, where he spent more than 14 years defending corporate and individual clients in complex civil litigation. Throughout this time, he also maintained his commitment to the U.S. Army Reserve. A SHIFT TO ADVOCACY In joining Cellino Law, Ryan embraced a new chapter focused on representing plaintiffs. “At this point in my career, I felt I was well-suited to serve people who have been injured by others,” he says. At Cellino Law, he looks forward to taking on a wide range of negligence and personal injury cases. LIFE BEYOND THE LAW Outside of the courtroom, Ryan is equally committed to his family and community. He coaches his son’s lacrosse team and serves on the Public Safety Committee in Orchard Park, where he resides with his wife and their three children, ages 14, 11, and 8. “My wife and I work together to manage our family activities,” Ryan says. “It’s always a balancing act, but I owe so much to my wife and family for their support. They make it possible for me to do what I do.”

VACATION MISHAPS: How to Protect Your Rights After an Injury
Your health should always be a priority. Seek medical attention promptly. A medical examination can uncover hidden issues and generate records essential to any legal claim. Determining liability is another key component of seeking compensation. If an accident occurs at a hotel or resort, the property owner or manager could be responsible if negligence, such as failing to maintain safe premises, contributed to the injury. For accidents involving tours or activities, liability may fall on the operator if they did not provide proper safety equipment or instructions. Filing a claim can be complicated, especially if the incident occurred in another state or country. Typically, you must file the claim in the state where the accident originated. A qualified personal injury attorney can help you navigate these complexities and determine where to file your case. Vacation injuries can bring significant financial burdens, from medical bills to lost wages. Filing a personal injury claim may provide compensation for these losses and pain and suffering. Taking swift action and consulting an attorney protects your rights, allowing you to focus on recovery. While vacations don’t always go as planned, knowing your options can help prevent an unfortunate incident from overshadowing your experience. If you’ve been injured, give us a call at 888-888-8888 .
Whether you’re a snowbird escaping the cold or heading out of state for much- needed rest, vacations are a time for adventure and unwinding. Unfortunately, unexpected accidents can quickly turn a getaway into a stressful ordeal. Knowing your rights and the steps to seek compensation is essential if you or a loved one is injured while on vacation. Personal injury laws in New York and beyond allow individuals to recover damages for accidents caused by another party’s negligence. Common vacation-related injuries occur in hotels, resorts, on tours, or while using rented recreational items. These often include slip-and-fall incidents, water sports accidents, and injuries caused by defective equipment. If an injury happens, the first step is to document the incident thoroughly. Ensure the hotel, rental facility, or local authorities file an official report. This record serves as critical evidence, supporting your claim and providing a clear picture of the scene. Whenever possible, take photos or videos of the accident site, defective equipment, and your injuries. Collect contact information from any witnesses who can corroborate your account.

AI That Helps You Plan, Create, and Thrive THE FUTURE OF PRODUCTIVITY IS HERE
Have you ever wished you had a personal assistant to help you stay on track and organize your life? Thanks to the latest in AI, you can have a sidekick in your pocket who knows all your long-term goals. Voice Notes AI is a handy app that allows you to record notes on anything from your stray thoughts, to-do lists, or ideas. It’s not just about giving you reminders — it’s a powerhouse for organizing your day, managing tasks, and even helping you brainstorm ideas. PENCIL IN YOUR PERFECT DAY Voice Notes AI is an intelligent way to plan your day and the tasks you need to complete. It will ensure you’re always in alignment with your long-term goals. Record your priorities, what you want to accomplish, and details about your life. Then, start your morning by asking your AI assistant to provide a plan for the day and give tips on what would help you get closer to your goals. The app then pulls information from your recordings and cross-references it with your calendar to create customized daily lists.
TURN PHILOSOPHIES INTO PRODUCTIVITY To get even more personalized suggestions, you can teach your AI assistant about the philosophies, beliefs, and books that drive and inspire you. Next time you pick up a book or think about a mantra that moves you, record your thoughts using the app. Your digital assistant will consider that information and provide specific insights when you ask for daily to-dos or check in on your progress. UPGRADE TO YOU 2.0 Your AI assistant can teach you about yourself and help you develop better habits. Once you have added several recordings to the app, ask it for a personality analysis as a fun way to learn how you think. You can also ask it to help you create an effective wind-down routine at the end of the day to help you for the rest of the week. Try making a “worry box” where you record concerns and ask your assistant to give suggestions on overcoming them.
