When a hedge trimmer isn’t up to the task then a chainsaw is an obvious choice. The right one can save you lots of time, whether you want to thin some shrubs, chop wood for your log burner or trim some trees. Chainsaws have come a long way from originally being in the domain of the professional lumberjack. Nowadays they’re crammed with advanced technology and safety features based on those of the professional saws, with easy handling and ergonomic design so you can work without tiring. Choosing the correct product for the job can seem a little daunting with so many features to consider: Power – how much do you need? As a rule of thumb, the harder and thicker the wood you want to cut, the more power is needed to cut efficiently. For normal domestic tasks like trimming small overhanging branches or general garden maintenance, a less powerful chainsaw will be up to the task. Type of power - Chainsaws come in three different power sources – electric, petrol and battery. If you're going to be near a power supply you could opt for a corded product. These are less expensive and usually easier to maintain. If not, then consider either a battery or petrol chainsaw giving you freedom to tackle tasks in a larger garden. Bar length – this is the length of the cutting bar - the longer the bar the bigger the logs you can cut. Weight – When you’re using a chainsaw they can seem to get heavy very quickly. Battery and electric versions tend to be lighter than their petrol cousins. If you can, try a number of models and choose the one that’s the most comfortable. Safety should be a top priority. A well-designed chainsaw will have many built in safety features like an automatic chain brake. This means the blade will stop immediately in the event of a kickback which can occur when you impact a hard surface or when activated by the user. And ALWAYS wear protective clothing.
