Sioli Alexander Pino Attorneys at Law December 2018

Each month, we’ll be highlighting one of our diverse specialties.

Our Diverse Specialties Property and Marine Hurricane Damage The fall is usually a busy time for insurance companies, and this year was no exception. For the second year in a row, major hurricanes made landfall in the United States. Although hurricane season has passed, insurance companies are likely still sorting through damage from this year’s hurricanes. Hurricane Florence made landfall in the Carolinas in September, inflicting substantial damage primarily via crippling rainfall and flooding. Hurricane Michael struck the Florida Panhandle in October and is recorded as the strongest storm to hit the United States in nearly 25 years. The disaster was a Category 4 —only a fewmph away from being a Category 5 hurricane — and left Florida and several other states in devastation. With a storm surge of 14 feet and winds that reached 155 mph, trees were snapped in half, roofs were torn from homes, boats were pushed into residential areas, and many buildings were swept away. Some of the attorneys and staff at our firmwere in South Florida for the last Category 5 storm to strike the United States, Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and most have weathered several named storms thereafter. We’ve seen firsthand the damage such storms cause to infrastructure and the resultant challenges insurance companies face when confronting voluminous losses in austere environments. Fortunately, from Andrew to Michael and all the tropical events in between, we as an insurance litigation firm and the insurance industry in general adapted to meet these challenges. For example, the use of advanced drone and satellite technology can permit access to damaged areas previously unreachable. Also, in litigated and nonlitigated claims, access to pictures and video on smartphones and social media can assist in resolving both first- and third-party issues. We often utilize information from such sources and other cutting-edge technologies to conclude claims. And finally, because we practice in diverse specialties, we are able to implement the ideas and strategies from other types of litigation toward successfully resolving property and marine hurricane damage claims.
